Absolute Batman #1

"I wanted to do a story where it really is for my kids. Maybe not just yet, it's a little too violent and dark, but it's written for my kids. Batman always made me brave. Growing up in New York, I love the idea that he went up against nuclear war, like in The Dark Knight Returns. My anxieties were reflected in these books in the ’80s. And for him here, I want him to go up against things that feel unmovable, like giant civilians and systems that feel like you can't change them, so you just have to compromise, which is Alfred's point of view as a kind of mercenary coming to town. For Batman, though, he's this kid that does not believe that. He believes you go up and you bang your head against it over and over and over until you get it to change. So, it's a totally different take." -- Scott Snyder

Batman Beyond: Neo-Gothic #2 features Killer Croc from Gotham's past.

Issue #1'd ended on him appearing in the sewers of Gotham - attacking Terry McGinnis, who'd come down in search of disappeared children from above.

Croc carried Terry off - Terry managed to escape his grip.

He appealed to Croc - to Waylon Jones, grown in size and narrowed in focus.

It didn't work. )

Red Hood: The Hill #2's about not tipping over.

Issue #1'd ended on villains taking an opportune step towards " bringing order to Gotham " - Slayer and his fellows Grimm and Glee gunning for Strike, one of the vigilantes of this mini's sub-titular Gotham neighborhood.

The Hill-folk fought in the Hill, three to one.

Slayer had Strike at his mercy - and then two of her fellow neighborhood Watch members joined the fray.

The odds were even. Slayer was undeterred. )

Detective Comics #1074 is Batman on the run.

He's thrashing through the streets of Gotham, racked by an azmer of the Orgham family's.

He's running in his head too, being pursued through memories by that demon.

Outside his head, he's being pursued by Gotham police, who want him for the destruction that the Orghams maneuvered him into.

There's two directly on the Batman's trail, and police commissioner Renee Montoya taking their reports. )

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth

“The first shock came when I was told that the book had been canceled. Eager to embrace influences from Cabaret to the Theater of Cruelty, the Joker was to have been dressed in the conical bra worn by Madonna for her ‘Open Your Heart’ video. Warner Bros. objected to my portrayal on the grounds that it would encourage the widespread belief that Jack Nicholson, the feted actor lined up to play the Joker in an upcoming $40 million Batman movie, was a transvestite.

I wrote a long, impassioned letter to Jenette Kahn, and after some tense negotiations, we managed to keep the Joker in high heels at least, and Arkham Asylum went back on the schedule. I was sure that Nicholson would have loved it even more if he could have played the Clown Prince of Crime in a dress, but in the end, it was Heath Ledger who immortalized the [transvestite] Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight, vindicating my foresight.” — Grant Morrison

Batman: Reptilian #3 and #4

CBR: This is a Batman that is especially single-minded in getting the job done while not compromising his own code of honor. How is it getting to explore that here?

ENNIS: What we’re talking about here is a billionaire aristocrat who beats up poor people, as well as the mentally ill. I don’t know what that has to do with a code of honor, but it certainly appeals to my sense of humour -- which was probably my way into writing the character and the reason I enjoyed writing him more than I otherwise might have.

"Joker looks at Bruce thinking, ‘Ahh, I could work with this.’ Bruce is so closed off, and he’s so fascinated by, ‘Why is Joker like that? Why is he walking with a smile? What’s going on in his world?’ And when Joker encounters Brucie he says, he pats him on the head, ‘Hello, Brucie,’ because he knows him already, and it’s kind of like that project where you’re trying to teach your kid how to read, or you’ve gotta open their mind so they can see what you see, until they figure out that code, and then the world expands, and that’s kind of what [Joker] does to Bruce." -- Art Baltazar

Fanart Thursday (sort of) Chris Samnee's Batober 2020

We need some positivity in these... somewhat stressful times, so it's time for some fan art, though not quite fan art, as the artist in question is not only a pro, but one of the best in the business, but this is something they did for fun, so that's good enough for me!

Chris Samnee's annual Batman themed Inktober (Which he has dubbed Batober, of course) has been a high point of the event for a few years now, and 2020 is no exception. I love that he doesn't always make the obvious choices and pulls from both comics and BTAS!

If you enjoy them, check out his Twitter, where he also posts some of the early deafts and explains design choices.and keep an eye out as he usually e-bay's them eventually.

Just SOOOOOOO DAMN GOOD! )

Batman and Joker Are Friends - The Swim

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth

"The original first draft of the script included the character of Robin as Batman's sidekick. Robin appeared in a few scenes at the beginning then remained at Police Headquarters for the bulk of the book, where he spent his time studying plans and histories of the house, in order to find a way in to help his mentor. Dave McKean, however, felt that he had already compromised his artistic integrity sufficiently by drawing Batman and refused point blank to bend over for the Boy Wonder — so after one brave but ridiculous attempt to put him in a trenchcoat, I wisely removed him from the script." - Grant Morrison

Week of Wonder - The first introduction of Jason Todd

This is essentially, the introduction of Jason Todd to the Batverse, showcasing his introduction to the world of Robin-ness, reveal how pre- Crisis Batman handled so many things differently from his Post-Crisis self, and also highlight the gorgeous, rich artwork of the late, great Don Newton (inked by Alfredo Alcala), one of the most under-appreciated Batman artists ever IMHO.

Gotham City Monsters #6 opened on Frankenstein betrayed.

Killer Croc, to the shock of his comrades, had driven Melmoth's blade into " Frank. "

Croc turned to the Last King of Everything and told him to go ahead with taking the last two innocent lives he needed, in the water of Slaughter Swamp.

As the man once of the Sheeda gloated about the culmination of his multiverse-saving work, Croc kneeled beside his victim: " Stay down, Frank. Just stay down. "

" I'll be needing that dagger..

" .. did you think I'd forget? Be distracted?! "

Melmoth advanced, having perceived that the betrayal was staged to get Croc into his trust: " Did you think just a single evisceration could fool a king as old as history? "

" It wasn't yer trust we wanted, yer grace. "

He returned Melmoth's blade to its owner. It went KA-SCHLERK! )
