Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1

“The story of Dr. Frankenstein and his poor, misunderstood monster is one of the most recognizable and influential horror tales ever told… It’s also one of my favorites. The original 1931 film from Universal Pictures is a continuing inspiration for my art and storytelling, so, as you can imagine, I was honored to be able to play in that sandbox. Trying to tell an original story while staying true to the canon of that film was an exciting yet daunting prospect. It’s been some of the most fun I’ve had making comic books, and I know that fans of Frankenstein and horror will have a blast experiencing these characters and iconic scenes like never before.” -- Michael Walsh

Gotham City Monsters #6 opened on Frankenstein betrayed.

Killer Croc, to the shock of his comrades, had driven Melmoth's blade into " Frank. "

Croc turned to the Last King of Everything and told him to go ahead with taking the last two innocent lives he needed, in the water of Slaughter Swamp.

As the man once of the Sheeda gloated about the culmination of his multiverse-saving work, Croc kneeled beside his victim: " Stay down, Frank. Just stay down. "

" I'll be needing that dagger..

" .. did you think I'd forget? Be distracted?! "

Melmoth advanced, having perceived that the betrayal was staged to get Croc into his trust: " Did you think just a single evisceration could fool a king as old as history? "

" It wasn't yer trust we wanted, yer grace. "

He returned Melmoth's blade to its owner. It went KA-SCHLERK! )

Gotham City Monsters #5 opened on counterparts battling.

#4'd ended with Melmoth, former king of the Sheeda, kicking off the battle.

He'd fled, leaving his summoned proxies - the Monster League of Evil, alternate-universe loose riffs on Mister Mind's Monster Society of Evil - to take on his enemies.

They, Frankenstein and the six others against Melmoth, went at the League.

Frankenstein grappled with his opposite. )

Gotham City Monsters #4 made six seven.

#3'd ended on Kate Kane, Batwoman.

#4 opened on her in Gotham's Monstertown, facing Orca - and then Killer Croc - of the six in question.

The other four - Frankenstein, the Red Phantom, Lady Clayface, and the vampire Andrew Bennett - appeared to her, after the first two had caught her attention.

" Frankenstein. I see you found friends. "

He corrected her. )

Gotham City Monsters #3 opened on five together.

They were Frankenstein, seeking Melmoth of the Sheeda, and four - Killer Croc, Orca, Lady Clay, and the Red Phantom - he'd recruited through their desire to revenge themselves on that villain.

(Lives they cared about had been taken in service to his resurrection.)

They should've had a sixth, Andrew Bennett - but he'd gone seeking Melmoth on his own.

He'd found the Sheeda's Last King in the tomb of Doctor Gotham, and ended up under his control.

He, self-assigned keeper of Earth's vampires, was now kept in waiting for prey Melmoth's Martian mandrills were herding towards him - deacons of the Religion of Crime.

" Enough of this!

" You cannot flee forever, you walnut-brained heretics! "

The mandrills turned to face them. )

Gotham City Monsters #2 opened on Frankenstein's vengeful yell.

" Melmoth! " he cried, to the skies.

Below him, in Gotham's Magus Theater, that former king of the Sheeda had been brought back from the bowels of Martian horses by his loyal mandrills.

Melmoth took in the state of things, the hundred and seven lives that'd been spent for him - and was interrupted by the Red Phantom, the spirit of the Theater, breaking his cage to avenge what'd been done.

The Phantom was joined from above by Frankenstein and the vampire Andrew Bennett.

The three of them tore through the mandrills.

At Melmoth's command, one of the mandrills fulfilled his purpose - detonated himself, becoming a more-than-smoke explosion that allowed his king and fellows to escape.

There was only Frankenstein, Bennett, and the Phantom. )

Gotham City Monsters #1 came out last month.

It opened in Monstertown, the part of Gotham that'd become a quarantine zone for the corpses of giant monsters as a result of Night of the Monster Men.

Underneath, the vampire Andrew Bennett was bringing the Mad Monk and his lot to heel - and learning about the coming of a king from a red world, touched by " the cauldron of death and rebirth ".

Above ground, seven blocks over, Waylon Jones was coming back from another unsuccessful job search - another attempt to get work that didn't involve him being " Killer Croc ".

He vented at the desk of the hotel he was in. )

Monster & Madman #1

"I think this is the 5th or 6th time I've used the Frankenstein Monster in a story. I've always been fascinated with Mary Shelley's creation and I've found the creature lends himself to all sorts of new stories. There were eleven White Chapel Murders. Only five of them were attributed to Jack the Ripper. I became obsessed with the idea of a ‘what if’ situation where these two monsters crossed paths." -- Steve Niles

Frankenstein Alive, Alive! #4

Bernie Wrightson passed after only completing five pages of this issue. Before he died, he made arrangements with Kelley Jones to finish illustrating the comic based on his layouts.

As you will see it's not the most seamless of transitions but it's not too jarring either. As disappointing it is that the series was cut short as it was, I think everyone deserves credit for coming together and bringing forth some semblance of a conclusion as opposed to leaving it unfinished in limbo.

On a final note if you liked these posts the entire series is on sale at Comixology for 99 cents an issue (with the first three issues available in a one-shot) here.
