Batman: Dark Patterns is the dynamics of Gotham City.
It's the strangeness of Gotham and its perpetrators, and Batman against them.
Issue #1 (of 12) opens the first arc (four planned, probably three issues each) on Batman early in his career going on about the things that happen in Gotham.
Those acts aren't characterized as spectacles in and of themselves, but expressions of their perpetrators.
( Batman's first-person narration reinforces that. )

Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader, Part 1

And then life happened, and one day I mostly wasn't writing comics anymore. I didn't have time and, mostly, didn't have the smallest inclination. It would, I told people who asked, take something very special to get me to make the time to write something for comics. Or even, truthfully, to write something I didn't own... Then the phone rang and Dan DiDio asked if I would like to write a Batman story. -- Neil Gaiman

Batman #142

“Look, I want to be clear up front: I don’t endorse his crimes!!!!!! But I do like The Joker. Much like Batman, he’s a very malleable character and there are a lot of fun takes on him across all media. So I always knew I’d want to take a stab at a proper Joker story during my run. And this is it!” — Chip Zdarsky

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #1 - "The Winning Card"

It's a completely unoriginal idea. I've done a lot of original ideas, this won't be one. This is a Joker-Batman story. You've seen a thousand Joker-Batman stories, this is another one. It's something you've all seen a thousand times. It's Joker and Batman in the beginning of their careers confronting each other. I've written a lot of original things. This is not that. -- Tom King

Gotham City: Year One #6 (of 6)

I think I’ve officially written more Batman issues than anyone alive, so to find something new to say about Batman is a challenge, and I like challenges. -- Tom King

They said, we want you to do a Batman book. I was like, 'Sweet. Batman sells great. That's going to be awesome. I can feed my family.' 'No, but we want it without Batman.' -- Tom King

Batman: One Bad Day - Bane #1

"When I was approached to do this one-shot, the challenge was that the greatest Bane one-shot had already been written. 'Vengeance of Bane.' His first appearance, his origin, and one of my favorite one-shots ever. I didn’t want to re-write his origin. It’s iconic. So it was a struggle to crack the story and how it would be different from the rest of the 'One Bad Day' issues. Then I was watching WrestleMania. Triple H, one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, came out and left his boots in the ring. It was an emotional moment as he had some intense health issues the year before and was forced to retire. He never got to have his last match. But it was for the best. For his family the sacrifice was worth it. But watching him leave his boots in the ring made me think about what we consider to be our 'life’s greatest moments.' And our ideas on legacy. And then it hit me. 'The LAST Vengeance of Bane.' And it became a story about someone trying to recapture the greatest moment of their life and how it was impossible to do. Then I had the story. 'Old Man Bane.' And it all came together in my head pretty quickly after that." -- Joshua Williamson
