And then life happened, and one day I mostly wasn't writing comics anymore. I didn't have time and, mostly, didn't have the smallest inclination. It would, I told people who asked, take something very special to get me to make the time to write something for comics. Or even, truthfully, to write something I didn't own... Then the phone rang and Dan DiDio asked if I would like to write a Batman story. -- Neil Gaiman

I saw Dan DiDio by the elevators, and Dan's like, "Tom! Tom! Come here, come here, come here!" I was like, "Oh shit, I'm going to get fired. This is it." I don't know what I did wrong, but he puts his arm around me. I won't say whether he was sober or drunk but he was drunk, and he goes, "Tom, I know how you like those dark stories!" I was like, "Yeah, I do the dark story occasionally." And he's like, "If you want, 'cause you're my friend, you can kill that little girl at the end." -- Tom King

He was like, you don’t understand: Darkseid is. Have you ever gotten to a situation where you had two choices, and you knew one was right and one would mess you up but you still did the wrong one? Darkseid is. Has your wife ever said anything, and you knew if you responded in the wrong way it’d ruin your week, and then you still said it? Darkseid is! He’s always present, and he’s the path you can always go down that represses you. -- Tom King

I basically say before each chapter, "if I never get to do another Superman story after this one, what would I write?" So here's one where Superman is boxing. Right now I'm (slowly) writing a Flash/Superman race... -- Tom King

That was one of the issues where if I had thought about it maybe from a different perspective from my own sort of white dude perspective, I think I would have done it differently. I think it's good to acknowledge when you make mistakes. I love that issue, by the way. -- Tom King

The Champion prepares to destroy the planet. And the Thing rises from the mat, his face full of blood and pain. And he says, “Ya’ll never beat me! I’m just too stupid…and ugly…ta know when to quit.” In my CIA days, I took this comic with me every time I went to some odd, maybe dangerous place. When I was scared, I’d read it. Too stupid and ugly to know when to quit. Exactly. -- Tom King

Here's a moment from the "Live Kree or Die" crossover that shows Captain America wants trust from his fellow Avengers. And that Carol Danvers wasn't always as awesome as she is now.

My whole life I thought Superman would be a labor to write. Turns out it's a joy. He just does the right thing. And you follow that thread. -- Tom King
