I think more from the issue may have been posted here in the past (it came out like 14 years ago, so who knows, maybe my copy has nor appreciated in value!) so I'll restrict this post to the What If?'s explanation for Tony Stark becoming Doctor Doom. One that I feel pretty confident the MCU will not emulate.
