I'm so used to think of human-Cybertronian interactions as inherently annoying, given the Bayverse movies and the cartoons (ok, agent Fowler was awesome, and Jack and his mother were ok, but they were the exception to the rule) that I'm always pleasantly surprised when I see them in the comics and they are actually good. I've been really, genuinely enjoying the human-Cybertronian interactions in IDW. Marissa in particular has really grown on me, she is wonderful :D
Soundwave, honey, I love you, and following Megatron was a mistake allright, but dumping ALL responsibility on him is a total dick move. You knowingly and willingly committed numerous genocides, both against organic species and against your own races, just because he told you to. After 4 million years of doing that you don't get to pull the "it's not my fault, I was just following orders!" card. Especially as you still push the "all people are equal, but some people are more equal than others" ideology.
I mean, it's good characterization. No villain believes himself to be the villain, they all think they are in the right. It makes perfect sense that somebody who is so skilled at compartimentalizing he can personally wipe out entire civilizations while simultaneously being a genuinely good and loving father figure to his cassettes would be unable to see how fucked up he is. And good writing is supposed to get you emotionally involved, and here I'm feeling the strong urge to slap him, so I'd say it hit the mark.
Conversely, I want to hug Cosmos. Poor lonely underappreciated baby ;_;
Yeah, if you DON'T want to slap Soundwave, they're not doing him right, and Soundwave remains my all time favourite Transformer (Just looking at my computer desk I have three different versions of him on display! :)
Icon, did you pick that particular nickname because you always have such wonderful and appropriate icons? :D
I considered buying a Soundwave figure, but... I really dislike his G1 design >_>. It just looks so clunky imo, could never warm up to it. I may buy a Prime Soundwave figure though. I LOVED Soundwave in Prime, it's by far my favourite version of the character. That scene where he is captured, chained up and threatened with torture, and he just masterfully trolls the shit out of his captors with their own voices and a goddamn emoticon of all things is forever burned in my mind as one of the greatest scenes in TF history :D
Nah, I just decided if I was going to have one TF icon it pretty much had to be Soundwave. :)
I ADORED G1 Soundwave toy as soon as I saw him, such a clever idea to make not only his small army of cassettes transformable in their own right, but even his batteries were actually part of his transformation. Yes he wasa little clunky but he was still a cool looking robot mode with no kibble at all, and since thanks to him we also got Ravage and Laserbeak and Rumble (and Ratbat... and Overtkill... and so on) I'd forgive him a lot... and then when I heard that absolutely perfect voice they gave him... awesome!
The Prime version was impressive, his speaking only when he had to, and only by repeating other people's words was very creepy indeed, though I think the scene you refer to was sort of spoiled by him actually speaking as he closed down, even if it is a line the G1 Soundwave used in TF:TM.
I very vaguely recall Buzzsaw having some lines/personality in the original Marvel Comics mini-series.
I always thought it was kind of strange that Laserbeak got so much spotlight when Buzzsaw was the one that more kids were likely to own (thanks to him being packed-in with Soundwave). Now in hindsight I realize it was probably an insidious plot to sell more toys. That and "Laserbeak" is just a fun name.

Date: 2015-08-09 05:28 pm (UTC)Actually, is this the first time Buzzsaw has actually been given a personality and something to do?
Laserbeak usually gets the focus and missions, and I love that both of them work together as a double act.
