I will give it to the publishing side of DC on this - under the current regime (well at least since Blackest Night) they have done everything they can do across the publishing spectrum to show how powerful Aquaman could truly be. That's a far cry from when he was deemed replaceable by a younger doppleganger (Artie Joe).
To be fair...Aquaman needs this...he still gets mocked today despite most comic book viewers that watched Justice League (Timmverse), in which he was showed to be a very compelling character.
I don't think he needs casually getting one up on *Poseidon*.
Really, the old jokes aren't going to stop because he's portrayed as not a joke in the comic, and having him just casually beat powerhouses isn't very compelling.
If anything it just encourages the jokers 'cause they know they've gotten under someone's skin enough to make them react. Plus if you have to work to make someone cool, they are not cool. I would also argue that uncool Aquaman was fondly remembered, that was the reason for a lot of the jokes to start with. It was affectionate ribbing. Goofy Aquaman was fun. Powerhouse Aquaman is just another comicbook brick.
But, the thing is, through much of my time in comics... we have Serious Aquaman who didn't respond to the jobs. And he made it into the Justice League cartoon, and that was also great.
The powerhouse Aquaman overcompensating seems oddly timed to me.
It's only addressing part of the problem. Maybe not even the main problem. Sure, you've now established that the character's powerful, but his abilities away from water (so no marine telepathy) are still incredibly vanilla.
Super-strength? Not especially interesting and not especially "aqua." Which is an issue when the character's name is Aquaman.
