Season's Greetings from Robotech The Macross Saga #35

The penultimate episode of Macross (and thus the penultimate episode and issue of Robotech the Macross Saga), takes place at Christmas time. In the absence of Lynn Minmei (the popstar responsible for victory against the Zentraedi), Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes have grown closer, however Minmei has run away from her cousin/manager/quasi-boyfriend Lynn Kyle and is reflecting on her current situation.
















When Lisa reports in for duty she's invited to a Christmas party, and she lies saying Rick will not be able to attend due to illness, then Khryon and Azonia (Two Zentraedi commanders who did not side with the humans after the war) attack. Rick is not called up to combat them. Eventually he does sortie, but Khyron get's what he's after and leaves a nasty surprise of the citizens of Macross city.







Ah the infamous SDF-2 in the lake, didn't exist in the animation except references to in dialogue mostly in the last episode.

Wait, didn't Rick end up with Lisa in the end?

This is the second to last issue/episode. Yes he does end up with Lisa.

For all the editing they did to turn Macross into Robotech, why didn't they also leave out the fact that Kyle is Minmei's cousin? It makes the entire situation that much creepier, at least for Western readers.

Because everything about Kyle was meant to be creepy. When he wasn't either being stupid, disgustingly smug, or just plain hypocritical.

The Lynns are still canonically Chinese (in Minmei's case a resident of Japan with Chinese heritage) in the Robotech version, so it's not as big a deal for them. They left a lot of the edge in Robotech, most of the edits were to link the three shows together (plus lots of extra narration), the only show that really got hacked up was Southern Cross which had a lot of full frontal nudity plus establishing shots that showed it was definitely not on Earth.

I don't really remember watching the Robotech Masters arc when I watched the show on Sci-Fi Channel. I mean I probably did at some point since I own the Hovertank toy, but the Macross Saga and Next Generation arcs definitely stayed with me more. That arc also had the task of convincing us that the blonde protagonist of Southern Cross used to be the green-haired baby from the previous episodes.

The Masters arc is kinda the forgotten child in between the other two, between more memorable characters, better mecha designs and slightly less of a buzzsaw taken to the plot.

How do you know how Zentraedi genetics work, maybe it's like kids who are born blonde but turn brunette (That said there's some who think Lana/Nova should have been Max's kid)

I actually really liked Dana (Jeanne), Nova (Lana) and Marie...

Southern Cross had some really interesting scifi concepts around slave labour, collectivism versus individualism and such... It was too high concept for what it was I think, and so it got cancelled in Japan before it had a chance to reach it's natural conclusion...

Robotech arguably gives it a more satisfying ending. And I'd say as it relates to Robotech's backstory it's actually the most important arc.

I used to hate MOSPEADA/the New Generation as a kid cause I'm not a huge fan of westerns, but I grew into liking it more recently
