(Guess Mephisto doesn't have the heart to tell Not!Phil that he doesn't need to brainwash the Squadron to have them fight the Avengers. "Taking away that determined expression would be like kicking a puppy into the sun. I may be terribly evil and petty, but there are certain things even I won't do. If only to maintain my street cred.")
Pardon my ignorance, but might I ask: how did Mephisto get out of Las Vegas? Shouldn't Johnny Blaze have all his power? Wasn't there an issue where he fought Captain Marvel recently? Is this Squadron Supreme brainwashed or are they robots?
Mephisto has been around doing his thing all this time, but a recent solicitation for Avengers shows Johnny is still King of Hell, so presumably Aaron is going to answer this.
The Squadron is brainwashed (it's even shown that Coulson has brainwashed his subordinates since they're uncomfortable with controlling American citizens like this), and they have "backstories", but we don't know if they're true, or if they're clones or something.
I don't think Hickman had his own Squadron Supreme. He introduced his own Hyperion, as well as another Justice League expy team the Great Society
Robinson had a Squadron Supreme made up of multiversal refugees from the whole Incursion crisis (Hickman Hyperion, Squadron Supreme Nighthawk, Great Society Doctor Spectrum, Blur from DP7. And Squadron Sinister Zarda) But they broke up after they got in trouble with SHIELD for killing Namor as revenge for the Illuminati destroying the Great Society's Earth
Actually, there was a prophecy during Civil War II that Hyperion and Nighthawk would go to war against one another. Hyperion averts this by disbanding them.
DC: Okay, today we've released a comic which totally ruins one of your favorite characters by depicting him of committing manslaughter by having a nervous breakdown. Literally nothing produced this week could be as vicious a character assassination.
Y'know... I got nothin'. So what if this latest iteration of the Squadron Supreme is a brainwashed bunch of stooges clearly assembled in a shadowy government facility, based on the Avengers files of the real thing?
There have been so many versions of the Squadron that one more shitty iteration doesn't add anything new, and if they all get wiped out, it won't be a loss.
What would be interesting is if they were all existing superhumans who had been kidnapped and altered to fit the roles. Like "Hyperion" is really Sentry, "Zarda" is Thundra, and so forth. And then they break free and kick the shit out of "Coulson" who turns out to be... fuck, I dunno, take your pick, and Mephisto.
Well he's got that same feathered shoulder thing Sabertooth had in that one costume.
(I could never tell if all that fur was the costume or was actually Creed. Of course in this case I think its Mephisto. I mean what do you even call that? A shoulder Beard? I don't know but I kind of want to grow one now. Somehow.... I mean I'm already kind of hair back there but not that much.)
Also, damn that is a huge ass Ham. Coulson went all out for this dinner date.
Everyone seems to be just ignoring Damnation, just like they ignore every other consequence and spin-off of Secret Empire. This is probably a good idea.
...when? Mark Waid and Ta-Nehisi Coates' runs on Captain America have been about Steve Rogers in a post-Secret Empire world, and, as shown in a previous issue, Johnny Blaze is still King of Mephisto's Hell. Besides, what was wrong with Damnation, might I ask?
