Kraven died with his own twisted sense of honor, and has been mystically reborn as an abomination. He needs Peter to finish him and undo what his wife and children have wrought.

Apparently Kaine was slowly dying from clone degeneration and this is the only way he could 'redeem' himself.

Kinda seems that the slowly dying of clone degeneration bit actually helped his existing deformities stemming from clone degeneration/mutation. He's always been shown with a waaay more messed up face and bigger body build.

Actually, the giant body was just a result of terminal 90s-itis, thankful cured by a dose of reasonable art.

Aww. I liked that he was mutated. I think they said he was stronger at some time (which would explain the extra body mass). But maybe Kaine just realised the potential they both had and used his strength more. And not only was Kaine's body mutated, his spider-sense developed into visions of the future. So all in all one could argue that the two doesn't necessarily need to be that alike, even though Kaine's a clone.

I think two issues prior to this one Peter mentions him being bigger and stronger version than him and is surprised when he sees him in his apartment all weak and beat up.

Peter wore the Black Suit during Kraven's Last Hunt. Given that this arc is a timey wimey ball of symbolism ...

And Mattie had to be fridged... for this? *sigh* I didn't even like her that much, and I still think she deserved better. And Kaine!! Admittedly, my preferred characterization of him comes from MC2, but still, I kinda liked the guy.

Wait a minute! Is that... Chameleon in the first page? He's in this?
Then again I suppose his involvement makes more sense than Als. And actually throwing a bunch of Spidey's enemies at him to soften him up for this ceremony sounds like a Chameleon approved plan.

And you'd expect Calypso to be part of this. I think she's dead at the moment but it would not surprise me if the spells mentioned above were of her design.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure he's Kraven's brother. So it makes sense that he'd be part of this.

Oh he is. They're half brothers (Kravens dad impregnated the servant, and the servants kid got to be sort of but not really part of household) and Chameleon has had a disturbing fixation on making Kraven proud of him, even if he's dead.
During his mental issues, Chameleon briefly thought he was Kraven. As soon as he'd come to turns with being a Kravinoff and felt worthy of it, Al up there shot him in the head. But he got better.
Al has since been pretty much a hero from what I've seen, making this ritual/slaughtering thing a bit odd.

I don't really care for Kraven but I do love Chameleon and this could be an interesting story if they explore a bit of what this means to him.

When did Kaine get his face fixed? And lose like 50 lbs. and 7 inches?

I was wondering that. Especially the face. Kaine's supposed to be, like, The Spider of the Opera. (Heck, he even has the scarring in Spider-Girl 'verse. It's less visible, presumably due to aging, but still there.)

I'm not a Spider Lore guy, so can someone tell me how Kraven recognizes Kaine's scent if he was dead something like 10 years real time and likely a couple years comic time before the whole Clone-tastrophe? Not that I care, I'd just like to know if they actually crossed paths or this is more of the Mephisto-It's-Magic-Shut-Up timeline rearrangement.

The current arc has a back-up storyline at the end of each issue that details an encounter between Kraven and Kaine before Kraven's death. It's being written by J. M. DeMatteis.

I think they got their issues mixed up; she resurrected herself after the Lizard killed her, but her last appearance was when Aloysha killed her.
