sweettart1823: (Ollie Mia)
[personal profile] sweettart1823 posting in [community profile] scans_daily
So last time Star City was encased in a demonic bubble, and Mia killed a guy so that everything could go back to the way it was. What is going to happen this time? I dunno, lets look and find out. I think it's something big ;)

In issue 40 Ollie recaps for us what happened

Than him and Dinah have a fight

They end up splitting up, not related to Mia but it happens.

Then in issue 41 Connor and Ollie talk and Connor tells him that Ollie is being weighed down by everything, and he isn't the only one.

So in issue 42, Ollie is lured into a trap and he's sort of over whelmed.

Aawww xDD Ollie

So Mia gets Stitches and in issue 43 everything is cool, sort of, other then Brick and everything but whatever.

And then she goes to get her stitches out

Now in issue 44 I would like to post everything, obviously I can't. A lot as already been posted, the conversation between Mia and Connor you can find that Here Soo I can't really post anything from this issue, which I guess is good because I wouldn't have known what to post.

But anyway Mia is diagnosed with HIV, and her Ollie both have issues with facing it and Connor yells and Ollie for it, then him and Mia talk, that's what was posted before that I linked to.

So in issue 45 Mia gives a speech to her class about her being HIV positive and Ollie is still being a crab ass so he goes and beats up Brick.

And that's how Mia became Speedy. Yay! :D Soo we'll stop here, for now?

First Mia in gym clothes and domino mask, now Mia in a hoodie (I happen to like hoodies) and mask. She pulls them off well. Still, gotta love the Speedy outfit. Really hoping DC doesn't just..toss her away. She's too good a character and in need of her own redemption and heroic journey. I stick to my thought that she needs a solo adventure or two to come into her own without always needing the likes of Ollie. I want to see her take all she's learned and utilize them.

Also..still waiting on more Mia in Smallville..still wish they added Roy though..just sayin.

Mia was in Smallville? Okay, so I've watched maybe one episode in the last several years, but I though I would have heard of that.

As far I'm concerned, that and everything else that happened under Kriesberg's run is discontinuity.

I've always found characters in DC comics having real world diseases kinda... odd. You'd think in a world that has alien tech, time travelers and New Gods they'd get it beat.

Still, whatdoyado?

Liking the Mia posts! Good work!

I'm aware for the various reason behind the "Reed Richards is a useless asshole trope" but I thought it would be interesting anyways if the big 2 universes acknowledged the technological advancement that would come with living in a world populated by superbeings.

I sort of imagined that one one hand global life expectancy would go up thanks to tech advancements, but then it would be negated by increased mortality due to all the superpowered crime and near-apocalypses that regularly occur.

It's been a long while since i delved into Ultimate Marvel continuity, but I sort of recall regular mentions of superhuman tech being applied into standard commercial use...

In the ROBIN issues of Infinite Crisis, the Titans are sneaking through Lex Luthor's private stock of weapons, chemicals, etc. Mia says something like "If you see a vial marked Luthor's Secret H.I.V. cure, you'll let me know, right?"

I wonder the reaction if Mia *and* Lian had died during CRY FOR JUSTICE, as was the original plan (I think). The reaction from both the characters and fans on the forums. Dinah and the rest of the Arrow family *might* have given Ollie a pass on killing Prometheus if Mia had died as well. And we would have griped about how Dan DiDio hates us.

On the plus side, that might have meant that she'd have come back during 'Brightest Day', perhaps cured of HIV. That would have been nice.

Not sure about that. Dismissing a real world disease like that... I dunno, the fact she chose to become a hero in spite of her diagnosis highlights that it shouldn't (and in many cases doesn't) get in the way of living your life. Curing it magically, not so much IMHO.

Well, yeah, but let's face it, AIDS is not presented as accurately here as it might. I'm no expert on the subject, but I do know that you've got to be really, really careful about your health, and you'll most likely be in and out of hospitals a lot regardless. Mia is a SUPERHERO - she's constantly putting herself in harm's way in all sorts of weather. It staggers belief that she hasn't caught a cold, or gotten a cut infected, or done any number of other things that would lead to serious consequences for an AIDS patient in real life. Like I said, I'm no expert, but really, if they're going to keep ducking the actual consequences of the disease like that, they might as well just cure her - it wouldn't change the dynamic of things all that much.

She has HIV, not AIDS. It's not until is goes to full blown aids that catching a cold will be a deal.

She's mentioned as taking medication and the problems that go with that, so that's at least acknowledged, though I think the side effects would be pretty debilitating at times. Mixing blood is also an issue (FAR more likely in superhero realm than RL, which all the closequarter mutual-bleeding fighting they do) (making when she's drawn with boob window REALLY stupid) though I think it's been mentioned? If it hasn't it would be nice to examine that.

Though honestly, until you learn a little more about the disease yourself, you really shouldn't criticize how it's handled. Mixing up HIV and AIDS is a pretty basic mistake to make, so I was surprised to see that. :/ Winick's friend died of AIDS, didn't he? I think he knows quite a bit, at the very least.

From: [personal profile] psychopathicus_rex
I'm not criticizing how it's handled, exactly - like I said, I'm no expert, and I'm only now getting a real familiarity with the character - just that it seems unrealistic to give a superhero HIV, for the reasons you mentioned above. When you're out fighting bad guys every day and you have no particular powers, you have to be in tip-top condition, and it would seem to me to be very difficult to pull that off when you've got a disease, ANY disease, let alone one like HIV, where you have to be very careful about NOT putting yourself in harm's way.

Speaking as someone who has had in depth lectures about HIV/AIDS pathology... no. Maybe sickness related to pills but manufacturers are making more and more combination pills (so the amount of pills is less) and medicins are more and more advanced. People sometimes get symptoms during the beginning of the infection, cause it's still an infection (so diarrhea and all that) but that's the beginning, which passes. You can only call it AIDS when your amount of T helper cells is down to, what? 200 cells/uliter? Takes about 10 years (or longer, as I said, meds are getting better), and then you'll get opportunistic infections.

OK, so it looks as if I went in over my head with this one. Still, I find it difficult to believe that a person with ANY kind of disease would be able to wade into battle on a regular basis and not have that affect their condition somehow. Fighting is not good for you even when you're healthy; when you're sick, it's REALLY not good for you.

No, trust me, I get it, it feels hard to accept. If it helps, just remember that HIV is a Lentivirus (lenti=slow) with a looong incubation time (like Hep B and C, which will also take years to destroy your liver) and that the virus specifically targets T helper cells, which have a certain over capacity which is slowly whittled away until it reaches the 200 cell border, when there just aren't enough cells to compensate. Then all hell breaks loose.
The body really has an overcapacity in many areas (like the liver and kidneys), it's what makes it possible for such diseases to take so long to become noticeable.

...Ghaaahh, science. Science makes my head swim. I'll just stick with 'HIV takes a long time to affect one negatively', and leave it at that, if you don't mind.

I like Mia, but I didn't realize I was so attached to her that the idea of her getting killed off would send me into SHE-HULK SMASH! rage. But apparently I am. Huh.

I read through a lot of Arrow-stuff a few years back when I was seventeen, eighteen-ish, and I liked Mia then. I was (still am) automatically wary of teenage female characters- they were so very, very likely to turn into "Tee-hee, I'm a teenage girl you can identify with! I hate my body and have 'boy problems' and get involved in boring, depressing 'teen drama' like teenage girls are supposed to!". But Mia was okay, she was interesting, her costume wasn't ugly, I thought it might be safe to like her a little. To imagine elaborate future-AU settings where she was still alive at age thirty, where she got to be Green Arrow. (Or Arsenal or Red Canary, but GA is obviously the best idea. Connor and Lian could be Canary and Speedy!) So. If they'd killed her off... damn, that would hit me really unreasonably hard.

On the plus side, she and Lian could've been Ralph and Sue's sidekicks. Deadwoman and Deadgirl?

I like the Speedy outfit, but those boots are a tad on the iffy side. They're too bulky.
Also, it's commendable how Mia's post-shock reaction to killing is not 'I'll never touch the bow again', it's 'it was bad, but I can get past it.'

Yeah - I've never understood why some superheroes seem to intentionally make their boots as big and awkward-looking as possible. I mean, it's not like having heavy feet is a bonus when you're running over rooftops or trying to quickly dodge away from a blow.

This was by far the most enjoyable post! I absolutely loved the Ollie/Mia interactions. Aw, this is my Arrow Clan! Quirky and slightly dysfunctional when it comes to proper communication, but ultimately as close as any family when things need to come together! <3

And Mia is pretty badass, she just waltzes past any/all of Ollie`s arguments and just does her thing. The passive-aggressive angle (as Ollie noticed) works quite well with her.

I don't know whether it's ironic or not that Mia's first decision after killing someone is to wear an all black outfit, did she wear that beforehand? Otherwise it's sort of akin to what Arrowette was worried would happen to her after she killed someone.

I know the scans have already been posted before, but I'm a bit sad that we didn't get to see Mia's freak-out and bitter snark during the HIV diagnosis. That's one of my favourite moments of hers, because it just feel so human.

On the other hand, the bit on the rooftop where she tells Ollie about her childhood really doesn't (to me). I mean, it's great that she's able to tell it like it is, but there's still a part of me that thinks... How can she just say it like that? So concisely and so easily. To an older guy who is her new father figure. I guess it speaks volumes about how much she trusts Ollie.

You're right to point that out, and I'd have to go back to when I covered a public childhood sex abuse inquiry almost three years ago now, but some of the sex abuse survivors (who were mostly male as well) were pretty frank when they discussed it with reporters; those same survivors broke down when telling their stories on the witness stands. I think it depends on the situation and how much you trust the person you're telling.
