This came up in the Avenger's Academy post, with several people asking when and what happened when Luke Cage explained to the Beyonder how money worked. Since I'm the 2nd guy in the world that liked the Secret Wars (I'll be number 1 one of these days Phillip) I happen to possess this story in question.

This be from Secret Wars II number 2!

So you're probably wondering where all that gold went

well...

Giant gold knuckle-dusters don't just come out of nothing!

When I was a kid, I had an issue of Spider-Man that must have taken place right after this, as it involved the government covering up the building and dumping the gold in the ocean. Spidey saved the day, but all he got out of the deal was a gold notepad.

I remember that now...

Didn't he end up feeling cruddy about it, and returning it anyway?

I think the gold notepad was part of the Black Cat's costume for a while. I think.

I liked Secret Wars II. When I first started collecting comics, I scoured back issue bins to get all the tie-ins. A few times the Beyonder wouldn't show up at all, or be totally tangential, b I liked Secret Wars II. When I first started collecting comics, I scoured back issue bins to get all the tie-ins. It was an interesting idea, but I was never happy with how the New Mutants were treated in it.

The economist in me is wincing. But I laughed anyway. Especially at "She-oot".

In all fairness, they actually treated the gold like it was a real economic threat. The government shushed it up, and dumped all the gold in the ocean ASAP.

Golden Leotards don't just come out of nothing!

Psst, that's not Luke Cage. That's Buck Wild, created by the great Dwayne McDuffie and Mark Bright.

Heh, yes, Luke, lots of trouble in the world is because there aren't enough pieces of paper to go round. Maybe they should print more or something...

Between the building, and the tree that Phoenix transmuted into solid gold when she was going insane, the economy in the MU must be royally screwed.

Not really, given that all the gold ever produced by humankind EVER, and thus all the jewellery and ornamentation, and the gold that international banking has ever depended on, would form a cube about 82 feet to a side if melted down and put into the same place. The Beyonder, at a guess, just tripled that.

I actually have the issue where this is followed up. The government dumps it all, and Spidey keeps the Kingpin from hijacking one of the boats.

Kinda odd though, as I don't recall Luke or Iron Fist being involved at all.

I'm just waiting for someone to post scans of the scene where Spidey teaches the Beyonder how to go to the bathroom.

Was it anything like the body-swap episode of Farscape with Crichton-in-Aeryn's-body teaching Rygel-in-Chichton's-body how to pee?
