Heck, this has been a while.

So, continuing from the single post so many months ago, we restart here the birth and build of the Portuguese Republic. This time I plan to make the other two posts in quite a quick succession for reasons that shall become apparent tomorrow, so if you enjoy this don't fear that I won't take as long for the next part.

At the end of the previous chapter the king had been killed, the Republic had been formed and the first President had taken power, we now move to its first years of growth beyond 1910.

Part 2 - Oh! The Republic!
(drawn by João Maio Pinto)

As before, all translations are done by me(hopefully this time the typeface is more easily readable), as unfortunately there is no English version I can point you towards

Please remember that this is written from the perspective of an old man telling his youth in a letter to his son.

Our narrator tells us of a time he saw a tree being planted, before the first President of the Republic(Teófilo Braga which was mentioned in the previous part as the man in the tram) was replaced by the first elected President of the Republic, Manuel de Arriaga.

Of course the Republic wasn't calm, and conflicts persisted. There were strikes in transportations and monarchy attacks in the north of the country. But the father of the narrator continued on his job as a teacher and the boy who narrates grew to his sixteen years, to the age "where it's like finding gold under the earth. To wish the things that are farther from the roots. To start loving."(paraphrasing from the book here because I don't want to go beyond four pages per chapter even though I really do like the beginning of his story of romance).

As he goes through his teenage years, so the Republic goes along. Shootings, bombings, various conflicts and politics that give up under the pressure of those. And all along with this, time reaches 1914 and Archduke Franz Ferdinand is murdered, giving beginning to the first World War.

For two years Portugal continued in its conflicts, with a military class hard to control and even temporarily overthrowing the government. Which didn't last that long and led once more to more changes of government and elections. It's the continuation of the birth of a nationas the citizens stumble along into what they want.

And then:

Next time, war...

I really like the art in this - it's simple and expressive without being caricature.

Do you have any links to the scans in Portuguese?

I don't like reading "translated" works if I know the original language... goes for Portuguese, Spanish and English! ;)
