Kind of weird that the Ice King of all people is one of the more tragic cartoon villains in ages...

And the pay off in IRY, where Marceline (who Simon adopted as a small child just after the rest of humanity was wped by a nuclear war) is frustrated that her oldest friend/surrogate parent has become a blithering idiot who doesn't even know who she is, only to come across an explanation/goodbye note from him some 1000 years later...

Wow, these "knife to the heart" plotlines are really starting to become Adventure Time's thing. I mean, I love it, but that is grim.

Was it confirmed that Ice King actually "adopted" Marceline? All we saw was that he gave her a stuffed animal, and based on her note she did care for him, but her father was present for her childhood, so I don't know.

Hudson Abadeer was there when Marceline was a teenager, but as a very small child Marceline was either completely alone (as shown in the episode where Finn goes into her memories) except for the recent revelation that Simon seemed to take care of her.

Hudson... wasn't a particularly great parent, I mean he means well, but he's generally horrible at expressing it (allowing her to be possessed by pure chaotic evil so he could retire, on the basis that he thought that she wasn't being serious in her claims that she didn't want to enter the "family business").

There was a nice bit of dialogue about it being "the way [he] was raised", which shows how even his good intentions are warped by his own childhood (as far as eldritch evil can have something like that) and inability to look past tradition.
Adventure Time adds surprising amount of depth to standard messages on upbringing (Just look at Lemongrab and Goliad).

I really wonder what Abadeer's story was. Was he a human who was transformed by the Nightosphere amulet ala Simon and the Crown? Was he a vampire originally?

After an ill-advised Adventure Time marathon this week (what are exams?), it struck me that a significant portion of its villains aren't so much evil but so fundamentally broken that they can't function in even the most basic of interpersonal relationship or even in relation to reality. It's one of the many horrible reasons I love this cartoon.

The Lich seems to be the only truly evil villain in the series.

Oh god. I actually didn't watch this episode all because the "knife to the heart, twist" episodes always get me thinking dark thoughts D:

Actually this brings up something interesting I always wondered about: why Ice King never seems to pursue Marceline at all as a potential bride (to my knowledge). There are plenty of reasons of course (she'd kick his ass, she's technically way-old for his tastes, etc.) but I guess this might contribute to that. Some part of him remembers that lost little girl.

Too bad it's buried beneath enough psychological issues to make Joker proud.

[EDIT: OK so a quick Wikipedia search indicates that Pendleton Ward was not the writer for this episode, but I kinda wanted to scream his name anyway. As far as cool names go, Pendleton Ward ranks pretty highly for me]

The episode is great in a melancholy, 'Jurassic Bark' kind of way. It's sad, but at the same time it's one of the best segments the show's ever done.

Though the Ice King never hit on Marceline due to her being a Queen (of the Vampies, natch) while his type is strictly princesses. Any princesses.

Well, this episode is sad but thoughtful.

Jurassic Bark was shameless and knife-twisty and made me stop watching Futurama altogether.

Yeah Rebecca Sugar wrote it. She has also written 99% of the songs on the show.

It's a shame she left the show as she was a strong supporter of establishing cannon on the show.

I hope it doesn't hurt it in the long run.

I didn't find this one *as* knife-twisty, since we already knew Ice King lost who he was before.

I was looking through his Adventure Time gallery and I thought, hey wow, this is good stuff! Then I realized he was the guy who made all those Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 comics, and I read those and enjoyed them. He even made that comic about Ash and Pikachu when the PETA game came out!

Then... I looked through the rest of his gallery. Not one of my best ideas.
