'I'm an enormous fan of Chris Claremont. I think his contribution to comics is just gigantic, that these days he's enormously undervalued, to a degree that just staggers me. I'll be drawing on the love of this character I felt from my childhood, and that means drawing on my own inner Claremont.'

- Paul Cornell

The boy purposely jumps off the edge. Wolverine leaps after him and uses his own body to cushion their fall, saving the boy.

It's always nice when we get a well-written character!

I'd want to have a beer with this version of Logan.

grudgingly i agree...

i still think this guy should not a headmaster at a school...

I think the fact that he doesn't fit the headmaster mold is part of why I like it so much. It's sort of like the next step after the whole "animalistic loner making himself into a samurai" thing was pretty much accepted and ground in.

A likeable Wolverine? What manner of trickery is this?!

Always nice to see old minor characters reused. Are the others beside Victoria and, of course, Ann-Marie from anywhere particular?

I'm pretty sure Tomomatsu is new in this volume.

Marcus Harold looks an awful lot like Harold H. Harold, the goofy nerd vampire from the old Tomb of Dracula book in the '70s.

That's what I was thinking. I was assuming it was an alias but then he died after the casting of the Montesi formula.

Weren't all the vampires who died by the Montesi formula resurrected? So that shouldn't rule him out.

Yeah, I hope they use Harold more and reveal that he is the same H. Harold. it be nice if Cornell uses a supporting cast from that beloved Tomb of Dracula. Especially snice he wrote a awesome Blade and Dracula. Also, Blade brought back by accident, every vampire that was ever killed in his last 2006 series. that would include Harold and that would explain why there so many damn vampires in Curse of the Mutants. Sorry to be off topic, but it would be cool if Cornell uses Dracula and explain his new look as a result as his old body being destroyed complete due to being killed by the Excalibur sword in M13. so his followers had to resurrect him in a new body.

Apparently Faiza Hussain and other members from Paul Cornell's Mi13 run are in Avengers Assemble this week. :) Anyone have scans.

They did very well, haven't got the scans, but you might like how they presented Britain with this whole Age of Ultron business. Once again, we do alright.

So, does NIck II actually not know who The Watcher is or is just focusing on the matter at hand? Because I'd hate to think someone could be that high up on the SHIELD totem pole and not know who Uatu is.

It sounds like he knows who The Watcher is, he just didn't see him.

Am I remembering improperly, or does Rivera look an awful lot like the late, great, Mark Gruenwald? His shtick of cataloging superhumans certainly resonates with Gruenwald's legendary encyclopedic knowledge of the Marvel Universe back in the day...

When I saw Marcus H. Harold, I definitely thought of the similarly named vampire, who died when Dr. Strange used the Montesi Formula, and who, I presume, might have come back when the Formula was reversed in something I didn't read. :)

Dr. Jason Rivera is based on the late Jason Rivera, an Avengers fan who used to hang out on the AOL Avengers boards, and who was known of making encyclopedic lists of characters, appearances, etc.

When Jason passed, Kurt Busiek decided to pay his respects by creating Dr. Jason Rivera of Project Pegasus in Avengers v3 #6, whose specialty was... you guessed it... maintaining catalogs of super-humans. He appeared again in Iron Man v3 Annual 1999, also written by Busiek. I believe this is only Dr. Rivera's third appearance in the Marvel Universe.

This looks interesting. A few meta jabs at itself, but a real sense of danger and a good grasp on the character.

Clearly, what this guy thinks Chris Claremont writes like is helping him (this sounds nothing like Chris Claremont's overloaded fustian and slightly creepy bloviation), but other writers... really... please don't channel any inner Chris Claremonts.

If Cornell is channeling the Chris Claremont who was fond of layers of complex characterization, years-long subplots and juggling large casts of distinct characters while maintaining a reasonable and healthy respect for his female cast, all the more power to him.

The problem is that Claremont is way more infamous these days for his kinks, and there's little to no sign of that.
