Before the ghosts can get Trevor and his assistant, their soldier colleagues show up, having gotten a note left by the professor explaining where they'd gone. Since they weren't able to find the supposed basement in the hospital that was on the blueprints, they all retire to the nearest pub.
While there, the innkeeper overhears them talking about the hospital and mentions that one of the inmates escaped several years ago and now lives in his mother's farm. A confused Trevor says that he thought that all the patients had been murdered, and the innkeeper says that they'll just have to see for themselves then, and takes them several kilometres away to the farm of a Frau Hulda... who promptly starts shooting at them as they approach.
The innkeeper gets her to stop saying that there's something wrong with the boy, and that they're here to help, but she's still distrustful. She says she's seen how men with guns fix things. Then a inhuman shriek comes from her barn, startling the assembled people. Hulda explains that her son, Audo, had been in the hospital ever since she was a young mother, but back in 1939 they told her that he'd died of medical complications... only for him to show up at her door several years later.
She shows Audo to them, warning that despite what he looks like, he's still her son and all she has left from the war...

One of the soldiers with Trevor flips out at Audo's appearance and points a gun at him, which in turn freaks out Audo who transforms into a vaugely bat-like monster and mauls him to death as the rest retreat outside. Hulda then sings a lullaby to Audo through the barndoor, which appears to calm him down enough not to follow them outside and eat them.
Then Varavara and the Soviets show up, it seems that they had been following Trevor, and she thanks Trevor for being most... useful. She then walks into the barn, past the soldiers (the Americans and Trevor's friend protesting as she went), and closes the door behind her. Next thing, Audo starts screaming and there are crunching noises, followed by a blood drenched Varvara walking out of the barn, explaining that Audo was being kept in a hidden basement in the hospital, in "cold", and that he'd been able to escape through a drainpipe.
That was all she'd been able to get from him before the "accident", revealing Audo's body, having been pulled to pieces across the floor of the barn, to Hulda's dismay. Trevor notices, however, that Audo's arm has the number 112 tattooed onto it, implying that there might be at least another 111 creatures like him lock in the basement. With this in mind, he says it's probably for the best if the Soviets come with them for backup, which prompts them to barn the barn down with the mauled, and rapidly mutating, soldier still inside.
As they drive back to the hospital, Trevor asks Varvara what's going on, and she replies that they've thus far managed to piece together a scheme that Hitler had thought up in the during the war, where he'd arranged a meeting with a certain Count Vladimir Giurescu in Romania. For those who followed the Hellboy comics from the 1990s, Vlad was a vampire Hellboy fought way back when.
The revelation that Hitler met Vlad in person makes Trevor realise that Hitler was trying to make a vampire army, which Varvara says was originally the case. Himmler even gave it a name...

Date: 2014-04-29 12:37 am (UTC)One of my favorite episodes of Night Gallery is "The Devil is not mocked", where a bunch of Nazi's come to occupy a castle looking for local resistance, only for the resistance to be Dracula himself. And the framing device of the story is Dracula telling his grandson how he earned a medal of Honor for fighting the Nazi's.
