With thanks to the marysue website for their coverage of an article on "The View", it would appear that we have a new God of Thunder coming from Asgard...

“Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up. He is no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. And for the first time in history that hammer is being held by a woman,” said Goldberg.

Unfortunately while there was some joking to be had about who the character really is, no hard information was given other than, “The story behind her is she created herself. She was saved by Thor and she came down to Earth, followed him, and made herself look like Thor and so now she’s taking over.”

And Marvel's own PR piece on it is

Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series, THOR, written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.

Well, here's hoping it's good!

It should be noted that Wonder Woman once held the hammer, and so did Rogue (in a "What If...?" where she'd leeched all the life out of Thor more or less accidentally!

Or maybe marvel could have just put some thought and energy in to making a original female character

So did Rogue in a What if.

In fact, at the end of that What if, Odin did indeed update the inscription of the Hammer to read "Whosoever lifts the hammer, if he or she is worthy, shall have the powers of Thor."

If we want to bring in other What if's then Jane Foster* and Black Widow** have also been able to lift the hammer.

*In that issue with the ending where Odin makes a move on her after Thor chooses Sif.

**In one of the what if Age of ultron issues. (Though I did like how she wasn't worthy at first but when she took her last shot to save her comrades instead of herself she became Worthy)

So is this related to how Young Thor (or is it perhaps regular thor in a back to basics outfit and weapon) is with Captain Falcon in that Time Runs Out thing that Hickman is doing? And how will this jive with the Old King Thor future that Future Loki is trying to make happen. Also does anyone else thinks she looks frightening with the black eyes?

If I had to guess whatever happens in Time Runs out will be what makes Thor no longer worthy and leads to his hammer falling to Earth.

He'll probably have to make one of these hard decisions like blowing up an alternate Earth and that will lead to him no longer being worthy.

"Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

That ... doesn't make sense. Thor is his actual name, not a superhero alias. This new character, whoever she is, might gain the powers of Thor, but she can't actually *be* Thor. That's like saying a woman who put on the Iron Man armour would become Tony Stark.

Eh, whatever. It's not like she's going to be around for long. Maybe if she were the new Iron Fist or Nova or something she might have had a chance, but like others have said this will only last until the new Avengers movie comes out.

Huh, I just realized that this means there's gonna be a stretch in which both Thor and Captain America have been replaced, by an as yet unnamed woman and Falcon(?) respectively. It kinda makes me want to see Ironman get replaced too, for symmetry.

Wow though, between Thor, Cap, Mark Waid foreshadowing a substitute Daredevil, and the recent wrapping Superior Spider-Man stuff, Marvel has really been on a kick with subbing out their big name characters. Not that that's bad by any means, maybe not my favorite plot device, but it's kind of interesting and cool.

I always wanted them to somehow do a Thunderstrike/War Machine/USAgent/She-Hulk crossover... with also some combination of Female Yellowjacket, Bill Foster (or any other Goliath), Scott Lang (or Eric O'Grady). Just for a complete set of "replacement versions of original Avengers."

I wonder if this is going to be what Marvel does with Angela, to fold her in with Asgard. I remember reading something about her being some other sibling to Thor and Loki, but I didn't keep track of it past that.

Ehh I don't like it. I take that back, more like.. not feeling it. Why couldn't we just get a Valkerie or Thor Girl series? Did something happen to them recently to where they can't be used? We got two female Asgardian characters in need of their spotlight and to show off how badass they are. I'll still take a look at the book though. I always love strong, kickass women, but really do not like the missed opportunity.

It wouldn't surprise me if the failure (this may be too strong a word, I don't know the behind the scenes details or sales numbers) of Journey into Mystery with Sif and Fearless Defenders may be causing Marvel to think that there's little interest in Asgardians outside of Thor and Loki.

I give her a year. Though I appreciate Marvel saying they're actively targeting female readers with more female characters, trying to claim your replacement for a blockbuster movie character is going to stick is insulting their readers' intelligence.

It's hard to tell with the painting of her full body, but please tell me that section in between her belt and her breastplate is not flesh - because it would be a 'stab me here' window in her armour if it was. Hopefully it's not, but it's sure similar in shading to her arms.

Its not as bad as most boob-plates. At the very least it doesn't then leave her cleavage exposed somehow or cup them so close they look painted on; it actually looks sorta like how an old-fashioned chest plate probably would have looked on a woman, especially compared to how most female 'fantasy armour' designs tend to look.

Considering that CHris Hemswortth is still signed on to play Thor in at least two more Avengers movies and a third Thor movie, I don`t buy the `This is the real, permanent Thor now` hype one bit.

And considering that Thor is his name, not a codename or alias, I imagine that the original is still going to be going around calling himself Thor. Well, unless he decides to be Don Blake again.

I could see it sticking, if only because Marvel must have realised by now that they can pump out a 'classic' story arc in time with a new movie, an that realistically, they pick up very few new readers during the points movies are coming out.

But that's if they actually *want* it to stick.
