Justice League 3000 reveal - Ummm.... WHAT?

I'm not even going to mention who is going to be showing up in JL3000 #12 in the tags, just to maximise the surprise.

Yes, that is EXACTLY who you think it is... it's the pre-Flashpoint Booster Gold and Ted Kord Blue Beetle.

Maybe this will help: It turns out that Justice League 3000 takes place in the future of a pre-New 52 world.

Yep, you were reading it all along.

And now the team's getting two new members: Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, who will bring a 20th Century perspective on this 31st Century group. Newsarama talked to Giffen to find out more about the revelation.

Newsarama: Keith, we've been hearing that issue #12 has some new characters that people should be happy to see. And now that issue #12 is about to be solicited, are you ready to reveal who's coming to Justice League 3000?

Keith Giffen: Yes! Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are coming to Justice League 3000, as of issue #12.

I'm not going to keep this a secret anymore. I mean, if Beetle and Booster are coming back, we should scream it from the rooftops, right? Maybe more people will buy it who are Beetle and Booster fans, and not be surprised and miss the issue. So I'm not really big on hiding stuff anymore.

Nrama: Now wait a minute, which Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are these?

Giffen: They're J.M. DeMatteis and my Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.

Our Blue Beetle never got shot in the head. He never split from Booster Gold.

The last memories these two clowns have is that Max was mad at them. Then they woke up in a refrigerator on Takron-Galtos. It's our Justice League.

Nrama: So are they parasites, like the other Justice League 3000 members?

Giffen: No, no. It's Beetle and Booster. This is them. Basically, a cryogenic chamber is found on Takron-Galtos while they're excavating, and inside are Beetle and Booster. It's Ted and Michael. It's really, really them. It's not clones. It's not the parasite thing.


Well, that's.... unexpected, no?

Unexpected, but also pretty welcomed. Something about seeing those two fools running away while dressed in those familiar outfits just puts a smile on my face.

If this is going to make JL3000 live longer, I'm all for it. It's such a good comic, a shame that it doesn't seem to be doing well.

I have really mixed feelings about this. The confirmation that the pre nu52 Earth is still in existence is very welcome, on the other hand the future of that universe is now the JL3000 hell hole universe which bugs me a bit.

Also I've never quiet been the biggest fan of Booster Gold and the Ted Kord blue beetle. I mean unlike a lot of folks their inclusion really isn't much of a draw for me.

Flash really made a mess of things. The year 3000 is Legion territory, where's the Time Trapper when you need him?

The legion is getting the short end of the stick a lot in the nu52, they don't exist in the 3000 future, They existed in the Earth 2 future but it looks be getting the axe soon(o it won't survive to get to that future) and over in the Superboy title darker and edgier versions of the founding trio showed up to be Jon's minions.

That's probably just Cosmic King, Saturn Queen, and Lightning Lord but why they're following Jon is a question that probably has a stupid answer. I thought the LoSH was Earth-Prime.

They were specifically given aliases for the original founders and Garth's design hasn't changed as much. Instead of being from their original homes they are genetic creations that he helped escape.

If you mean Superboy Prime's earth Prime now that was the Threeboot legion. The restored to similar to the pre crisis legion was shown to be the future of Earth 2 in their last appearance.

What if anything the future of Nu52 Earth Prime is ... is anyone's guess because teen titans would imply it was Harvest's future while Future's end is showing a very different future.

Well, they are basically evil versions of the founders and Lightning Lord is Garth's brother anyway. They were probably made to be clones to take the originals place and destroy the future, right?
I thought the Legion would be Earth-Prime based on Grant Morrison's Action Comic.

They appear to be the version of the legion from Harvest time so the same future world where Bar Tor was from. The appearances in action comics may be the possible EArth 2 legion crossing worlds or the pre crisis legion visiting the nu 52. It's a confusing mess.

DC should really take the time to sort out the legion mess but I can't see them doing it any time soon sadly.

They've been trying to sort out the LoSH since COIE. I don't know why DC keeps making more confusing than it really needs to be.

Yeah I know they really should take a page out of the post Zero hour reboot and just reboot the legion along with the universe each time they reboot things.

What? The Legion played a central part in Morrison's Action run in the nu52.

BTW, how soon before Gold and Beetle drive Batman-3000 --who if anything, is less tolerant than the current Batman--crazy? The "Bwa-ha-ha" JLA HQ was one of the few things that could give Batman the cold sweats, because it was so illogically human.

The final issue of the Nu52 Legion hinted that it was the future of Earth two and then the creators kind of flip flopped around on it saying it was intentionally ambigous that it could be EArth 1 EArth 2 or some other unknown Earth.

So any interaction Superman had with the legion in the nu52 might not have been with the inhabitants of his own future Earth but instead from one of the neighboring worlds.

On the one hand: Booster and Beetle, pre-nu52, bwah-ha-ha and all. YAY! Not dead! Not edgy! Not nu52'd!

On the other: I dropped JL3000 very quickly as the characters were unlikeable and the premise didn't catch me and the setting didn't excite me. I'm not sure the creators have the same spark as they did 27(!!!!!) years ago. Heck, there's very little in the nu52 which continues to engage and entertain me; most of the titles I really liked fell by the wayside or have changed, and their replacements rarely live up to the hype. I'm down to a fraction of what I used to read from DC.

So as much as I want to see the team supreme back in action... I'm going to wait, see what others have to say, and maybe pick up the trade if they somehow work a miracle.

Forget that Earth 2 war thing: I want to see what happens when Pre and Nu team up to kick some villain ass. Come on, why does everybody want to fight alternate everybody these days?

I assume the Supermen would jokingly talk about their costumes, the two Dianas would spar before declaring each other worthy, and the Batmen would just stare at each other, deducing lots of things.

unless theres some huge plot twist involved, it honestly reads to me that Giffen just wanted an excuse to write Boostle again.

I first saw this on Tumblr (pretty sure I reblogged it from you, actually) and was ridiculously excited. Part of me still is. But if the last thing these two remember is pissing Max off, then they most likely pre-date an awful lot of character development and I don't know quite how I feel about that.

Fair point! I suppose it's also possible that whatever timeline they hail from gave them an even wider time-table. I took "[Beetle] never split from Booster Gold" as meaning they're from a good ways back in the timeline as we know it, but it could also mean that this Booster and Beetle didn't experience the same turbulence as the Booster and Beetle we know.
