NS: Darwyn Cooke and "f*** cancer"

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce Darwyn is now receiving palliative care following a bout with aggressive cancer. His brother Dennis and I, along with our families appreciate the outpouring of support we have received. We ask for privacy as we go through this very difficult time.

I keep wanting to say something about Darwyn and I keep coming up short. Everything I write seems too maudlin, too much about me, too navel gazey. In the end, his art profoundly influenced my tastes in both style and genre. I was lucky enough to met him twice and both times called him "legend". He was dismissive of the term, because that's Darwyn. But I could tell it profoundly affected him. And it was also the truth. He's influenced a generation of creators who bring the same optimism and color to a page - guys like Doc Shaner and Chris Samnee. So yeah, I told Darwyn Cooke he was a legend. And I dare anyone to call that hyperbole.

EDIT: I do want to add that Comixology was already running a sale on a ton of Darwyn's work and I'm sure that he and his family both could use some help right now.

Cooke changed the game in the modern era. He didn't just hark back to something or emulate, he evoked and kept a flame alive, a spirit. To loose that talent. It's tragic.

The thing that was so amazing about him was that in his time, he's touched so many genres and still managed to put his own stamp on them.

I have the ENTIRE boxed set of New Frontier. I don't even like some of the characters in it--Green Lantern Hal Jordan especially. But it was so well-put together and inspiring and superhero-like. Nearly everybody got their moment to shine.

He's a comics legend in his own right. I'll pray for him.

And now it's been confirmed that Mr Cooke passed away within 24 hours of the announcement of his illness.

Actually, it's a little unclear since the Shuster Awards site which posted the news, has just pulled the report of his passing as the sources weren't 100% certain.
