Always a favourite.... and I say that as someone who is not a particular fan of Jeff Loeb.

He does have a certain... reputation for "dude in distress" situations, especially on covers! :)

Either that was written before Loeb's Ultimatum period... or Cooke gets the lion's share of the credit for the writing. :)

I think the Joker musing over his happy times blowing up busloads of kids might be more Loeb, but I may be being unduly harsh.

Cooke's own Spirit run which was launched by this was distinctly different in tone. Not incredibly heavy-going, but more of a reimagining/slightly darker, in line with Eisner's own approach. So this strikes me as definitely more Loeb, given it's very much in the tone of his lighter 'Colour' books with Sale, or Superman for All Seasons. So while I know we want to give as much kudos to Cooke as possible, I don't think we should downplay Loeb's contribution/writing here.

As much as I was never entirely keen on this compared to the actual run on the Spirit by Cooke, that cover is still one of my favourite pieces by him. Says so much about the characters.

Not a fan of this story, I think it makes the lazy choice at every opportunity - but I love the art!
