"If there were a war on Christmas, I would be the general advancing on it. It’s over-commercialized. I hate seeing decorations on November 1 and I hate Christmas jingles. I had to listen to a lot of Christmas music while I was working on NOS4A2 and I wasn’t too happy about it. I’m sure if you were going down to Hell in an elevator, the music playing would be the Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas album and it would speed up the farther you plunged." -- Joe Hill

I posted this in two parts last year, thought it might make a nice comic for Christmas.

This comic is a companion and prequel to Joe Hill's novel NOS4A2, although you don't need to read one to understand the other. Trigger warning for child abuse/rape.

#1...

The first issue is based off material that Hill cut out from the novel. It serves as the origin of Charlie Manx, who is the main antagonist of the story.

The novel goes into a bit more detail about how this stuff works but basically Manx is able to access his 'inscape' which amounts to taking stuff from his imagination and making it real.

As an adult, Manx falls in love with a woman and starts a family. They are able to live comfortably enough until her father loses his fortune when the stock market collapses. Manx and his family are forced to toil in the fields to make a living.

He promises to return the car but shows his family a brochure for Christmasland. He says that he will take them there for vacation. On the way there he mentions that he bought in.

During the ride their daughters' teeth begin to fall out.

Manx's wife is horrified, insisting that Charlie has done something to their children.

Upon getting there however there is no Christmasland. Nick LeMarc was indeed a con artist. Manx's children encourage him to keep on driving, insisting that they can see it.

#2...

The guy with the face tattoos is Dennis Sykes, also known as King Geek, as in the circus geeks who would bite the head off things. Sykes manages to provoke a fight with the guard, causing him to throw up a garrotte that he had swallowed earlier. During the commotion, the car goes off the road and kills Sykes' man on the outside who was waiting to help with the escape.

Hansom says he knows someone who can help them and goes to make a phone call.

#3...

Flashing back to Chess and his son...

Back in the present, Charlie has arrived to Christmasland.

#4...

Flashback time again...

#5...

#6...

Sykes grabs the keys from them.

Sykes crashes through the window and off the off the edge of the cliff.

The two float away and land on the side of the road in the real world.

#7...

The final issue was an 'epilogue' of sorts told in illustrated prose. It ties in with #1 so you might want to take a look at that again.

The two come across a young pickpocket that he falls in love with and later becomes part of their crew to work people.

The Ph. D. is later arrested but is able to talk his way out of a murder rap and gets seven years in prison. During that time the protagonist and Lew get married. The two become major con artists swindling people out of their money. Eventually they have a child.

Yep, it's Mr. LeMarc. I don't think the protagonist is given a name beyond that so I'll refer to him as such for the rest of the story.

It turns out their daughter is deaf. Lew ends up in a state of depression that culminates with her apparently drowning herself in the same river as LeMarc's childhood friend but no body is found.

LeMarc ends up meeting his old friend the Ph. D. He sympathizes with LeMarc's plight and offers to help him with a scam of his own, to steal some money from the old woman who ran the home for retarded children.

The two work off the plan, only to discover that the Ph. D. is in on it with Madrigal and lets her walk away with the incriminating papers.
