As we saw in my last post, Peter and MJ have been going through a rough patch their marriage. MJ has been spending most of her time working in Los Angeles, and Peter missed her return trip to NYC due to an adventure on the astral plane.

In plot-related news, Doc Ock is also in town to track down the young punk who copied his technology. Guess who ends up crashing the movie shoot?







Spider-Man shows up and takes care of the Octopi.

Now that she's alive due to the deal with the literal devil we can TOTALLY have more scenes of her being awesome, right?

Oh. No. Because 50% of her awesome came from her knowing Peter was Spider-Man, and she doesn't anymore. And is stuck in a SHOCKING relationship with JJJ's father. Played for sophomoric humor.

I like the guy's double take at Lobster-Man. He's pretty sure it's not a real superhero, but he lives in a world where there could totally be an Amazing Lobster Man here to save the day.

Peter's hair looks so lush in this.

This story is one of the only trades in my local library, one of the first actual comics about Spider-man that I read I think. And as an introduction to comic-verse Spider-marriage, it still made my positive opinion of it rock solid. Even when they're separated they're such a good couple!

This might sound odd, but I quite like Brad/Lobster Man. It's so rare we get to meet a male co-worker of MJ's that isn't immediately turned into Potential Rival for Peter to Wangst About. Although you can see that Peter considers the notion, I don't get that feeling from the interaction in the dressing room. It's refreshing.

And yes, he seems a little bit slow, but I think it's cute.

There is the handshake bit, where Lobster-Man perks up once he hears Pete and MJ are separated. But it's nice that JMS holds back and doesn't make him a super arrogant macho sexpot jerk, or like Flash Thompson Part #256 for the sake of Spider-Angst. He comes off better than the producer, who's treatment of MJ is pretty much "put on the lingerie and shut up".
