Wow, "totally NOT a ripoff Deathstroke the Terminator" is sooooooooo AWEsome you can almost TASTE the 90's coming off of him. I can see why he faded into obscurity, the man has NO sense of humor. If he had one, he might actually be worth reading about...
Woo, check him out! One'a Liefeld's own bad boys! The pouches! The edgy name! The action ready pose! Could he be more 90s? Here, hold this beer, in a pouch!
If this were modern day Deadpool, it'd be a toss-up whether he had actually been aiming for Cable's leg or his crotch proper.
By now, Cable's name has been established as "Nathan". But it's a while before the whole "Summers" bit comes in. (And now I'm really wondering where the "future version of Cable" thing came from...)
... so Sam can modulate the sound he makes when he's blastin'? Huh. Odd detail.
It still astounds and confuses me how Cable and Deadpool managed to survive their initial introductions and become permanent mainstays of the X-Men ecosystem and near-constant headliners in their own right.
They truly were blessed with writers far better than they deserved to inject them with a measure of appeal and narrative resilience.
In fact, Cyclops's son was called "Christopher" until the issue of X-Factor he was written out, so it's very clear that was not the original intention for him, but the idea might have been right around that time. (The first season of the X-Men cartoon has no indication he has any connection with Cyclops, is from the future, and even his status as a mutant is openly questioned.)
I have this issue to this day! Still intriguing to see the differences as the "broken jaw" shows they hadn't had Deadpool's healing factor up but still the potential on the wisecracking to set him apart.
It's interesting reading this knowing Nicieza was putting words to the art Liefeld had already done. Because without words, that's Deathstroke. Wade having custom gadgets like that is not an element that stuck around, nor did those disappearing longswords. The dialogue Is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
I also suspect Nicieza had no idea how Deadpool's throwing blades ended up in his back.
