Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Jul. 11th, 2023 08:29 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

Date: 2023-07-11 09:03 am (UTC)Looks like RWBY volume nine is getting a Bluray release a few months from now.
Also the RWBY Arrowfell game was on sale so I got it. It's...not great. The first time I played it Blake got stuck in the floor and couldn't move. It did make her immune to damage which was actually pretty useful.

boy that'll be confusing for new viewers. But since it's a follow-up to Rebels and The Clone Wars, I imagine it's not going to very accessible to them anyway.
Usagi Yojimbo is going back to Darkhorse. For reference:
Volume One (Fantagraphic): 38 Issues 1987-1993
Volume Two (Mirage):16 Issues 1993-1995
Volume Three (Darkhorse): 172 Issues 1996-2018
Volume Four (IDW): 31 Issues 2019-2022
man there's a lot of Usagi. I have no idea why Sakai left Darkhorse, or why he's returning.
have begun reading The Book of The New Sun. The problem with modern science fiction/fantasy/science-fantasy, is that authors no longer present their works as records from the dawn of time, or psychic visions of the future .
You know the first Futurama revival wasn't as good as the original, and the second Futurama revival wasn't as good as the original, so call me a cynic but I don't think the third Futurama revival will be as good as the original.
But at least it'll have John Dimaggio

Date: 2023-07-11 11:09 am (UTC)RE Google: I’m just baffled that they limit the number of books you can have in your Google Play Books library. That’s a confounding business decision. Every single ereader uses "this can hold thousands of books" as a selling point and this app limits you to 1000. I can’t see Amazon ever saying “sorry, you can’t buy more Kindle books until you delete some of the old ones”
RE RWBY: Really? It doesn’t seem to be up for preorder yet.
*Intentionally avoiding SW spoilers until I catch up on a half dozen shows*
RE IDW: From what I’ve heard, IDW isn’t in great shape. I mean, I don’t think most comic publishers are right now but IDW especially.
RE Futurama: Futurama is my favorite show ever so I’m choosing to remain cautiously optimistic. Part of me is a little worried that the better writers are concentrating on Disenchantment but I may be worried over nothing because (a) it has been ages since I’ve heard anything about that show and (b) I seem to be in the minority in that I like the show.

And the whole industry is on fire right now.
And - even if things were stable - this is an animated show on Netflix.
This doesn't bode well.
(But Zombie HBO did just give us that Superman cartoon that was announced at least two streaming services ago - followed by years of complete silence - so I guess anything could happen)

Date: 2023-07-11 10:00 am (UTC)I habe also decided to give My Hero Academia another go. Volume 2 of the manga was pretty good, so I'm going to continue.
Matvel titles on my list:
Captain America and the Mighty Avengers. Al Ewing's Mighty Avengers gets renunbered for some reason.
Spider-Man: The Complete Alien Costume Saga. Spidey gets a rad new coatume.
Uncanny Avengers by Gerry Duggan. Who thought making Deadpool an Avenger was a good idea?!
As for Marvel Snap, I got the Living Tribunal and Negasonic Teenage Warhead from Collector's Reserves. I put Living Tribunal in my Devil Dinosaur deck, but have not yet found a place for Negasonic.
No notable variants unlocked through season pass progression. Just a Dan Hipp Mordo and a chibi Hood.
Conversation at work prompted me to go back and watch old WWE pay-per-views. The early Wrestlemanias weren't all that great. An early highlight for me was a tag team match with the British Bulldogs and some Canadian guys whose names I can't even remember. Then again, I am hugely biased.
I'm thinking the Attitude Era might be more exciting

Date: 2023-07-11 10:38 am (UTC)Three episodes into Secret Invasion and I still don’t know what happened to Goose. Truly this is a failure of a show.
Sprung is great and I regret taking nearly a year to watch it.
Attempting a TMNT 2003 watch-through but apparently not having a functional app is one of Paramount’s cost-cutting measures.
As part of the elaborate hoax where they pretend the show is real, the first episode of My Adventures with Superman has been added to the Adult Swim YouTube channel. I have no idea why it would be associated with AS since it is (thankfully) one of the lightest takes on Superman I’ve seen in a while. I love that Clark is a big clumsy ox who just wants to help people (and cats) and not stand out too much. The Owl House comparisons seem pretty apt to me; Lois and Jimmy have the same general vibe as early Luz and Gus when left unsupervised. Manic Pixie Dream Lois is a new take but I don’t hate it and I could still see her growing into standard Lois. Conspiracy theory Jimmy is the best on-screen version of the character I’ve seen since the last Superman cartoon series (Bonus: no mullet).
(And I know this isn’t the first adaptation to do this but I’m happy this show bypasses a staple of Superman media; I like that Lois and Clark clearly like each other immediately instead of having Clark in a love triangle with himself.)
Saw an ad on YouTube for Marvel Unlimited that used the exclusive Jeff comic as the main selling point. I approve of this.
(Their customer service is still terrible, though)
New Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tracks coming tomorrow! It does feel like this batch – like wave four – is a bit Mario Kart Tour heavy. My own nostalgia for the franchise really only goes back a few generations and, while it would be nice to see more DS and Wii tracks on a system with working online, I can’t think of that many glaring omissions. Okay, it’s a little weird not to have Luigi’s Mansion in light of the recent Dark Moon announcement but Twisted Mansion feels close enough and it isn’t like I love either track.
Also, there are new characters but I mostly play as my Mii or a Koopa Troopa. Still, you can now have a Wiggler on a Wild Wiggler or Petey Piranha holding a Piranha Plant. Sort of feels like they should have timed the Birdo release for Pride Month, though. Kamek is also there.
They’re making a My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance game and for some reason I find it amusing when they go full circle by turning non-video game media set in a fictional video game world into a real video game (See also “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game”).
Anyone here play TemTem? I’ve gone from scoffing at the idea of paying $45 bucks for an online-only Pokemon clone to “It’s on Humble Choice this month and there’s a stripped-down free version too; I guess I’ll have to make room on the Midlife Crisis Machine”. (er, I mean “Steam Deck”).
Also, I’m pretty happy to have recovered to the point where handheld gaming is back to being something I want to make time for … even though I find myself still not wanting to rush into the Zelda game where Link’s arm gets messed up.
Re Snap:
General note: I’m just going to type “cache” in place of “Collector’s Cache/Collector’s Reserve” for obvious reasons; it’s the “Spotlight Caches” that I still have questions about. I’m currently sitting on just over 90 unopened (so probably 9 Spotlight Caches).
Unlocks:
Nothing – I hope I don’t regret hoarding caches in anticipation of the update (today?). It feels like the primary reason to open them before the change is to get more gold (for variants and bundles) and tokens (for new cards). That brings me to …
RE the update in a few hours:
Every single major update in this game has been buggy as hell. I’d advise against opening the Spotlight caches until we can confirm they’re working correctly. Depending on how the new cache system works*, it might be best to delay updating the app for as long as possible to squeeze the most value out of the old cache system.
*Is it actually one spotlight cache per 120 levels or one spotlight cache per ten caches? If it’s the first then its best to open the other nine before updating. If it’s the second, then I’d update, wait until I was sure the update was stable, and then start opening 3-8 spotlight caches (depending on if you want the variants or just the base cards) … though I’m debating if I should open the other nine regular caches now or wait to see if the variant rushes return.
RE actual gameplay:
I have no idea if this was intentional but – while the Daily Bugle was the Hot location last week – I ended up being “gifted” an Agatha. I have to admit, that seems like a great way to toss a wrench into any deck that isn’t just about mindlessly throwing down big numbers. My attempts to duplicate this strategy were less than effective but my Agatha deck is kind of dated. Also, it’s funny to me that – much like Leech before him – playing against Spider-Ham makes cards like Agatha, Destroyer, Giganto, ect MUCH better.
Having a weekend where neither the Weekend Mission (win with Patriot? Don’t mind if I do) nor the Hot Location (Superflow is more of a nice bonus when it works out and a normal game when it doesn’t) are hostile to most players allowed me to get within reach of last season’s rank.
Anyway, back to feeding hammers to a dog.
PS: Looks like we just got compensation for recent bugs. WHAT we got varies wildly. I only got 200 credits because Weekend Missions didn’t work that first week but I’m pretty sure I should have also received 150 gold because I had the season pass card at the time. I’ve seen others post that they got as much as 3000 tokens due to a Spider-Ham bug. As always, PC players get nothing.

Date: 2023-07-11 05:42 pm (UTC)(Looks like it is getting a DVD release this year but I kind of wanted to justify the Paramount + subscription I have through November)
I think my favorite is still the 2012 one but 2023 is fun.

Date: 2023-07-11 11:47 pm (UTC)I was spotty at the time. I'm pretty sure I've seen all of the first two seasons but the third never got a full DVD release and I think I was waiting for that before watching the fourth one. I'm thinking I might take a look for the complete series set if it's at SDCC this week
2012 was a lot of fun as well. I also fell off of that around the third season, but that was a tumultuous year for me, all things considered.
Only ever saw one episode of Rise at complete random and it was just bad on every single level, but maybe it was an off episode? I'm not too protective of my time, I always figured I'd go back at some point.

Date: 2023-07-12 12:36 am (UTC)It takes a long time for any actual plot to happen and it was made for an audience that clearly wasn't me but it isn't irredeemable like The Next Mutation.
There's stuff I don't like (Leo seems especially off and present day Splinter is just awful) and stuff I do (most of which are visuals or spoilers) but pretty much everything the show does well is done better later when a lot of the animation team moved into Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
So I don't actually recommend giving Rise another chance but I highly recommend Moon Girl.
Edit: Okay, I DO recommend watching the musical number from "The Evil League of Mutants" in the first season of Rise.

Date: 2023-07-11 05:31 pm (UTC)Bad news / Good News RE Snap.
Bad news is that the update is delayed until at least tomorrow. Not really a surprise.
Good news is we have information on this month’s spotlights.
Week of 7/11
Jean Grey
Knull
Living Tribunal
(this is confirmation of last week’s rumor).
Week of 7/18
Echo
Iron Lad
Kang
Week of 7/25
Legion
High Evolutionary
Darkhark
Week of 8/1
Mirage
Thanos
Master Mold
So, the spotlights include the week’s new card, three out of four “big bads” (no Galactus), a couple LONG overdue cards (Knull and Darkhawk), and a genuinely pleasant surprise (Iron Lad). Also Master Mold are Living Tribunal there.
I’m unclear on if anything will drop to pool 3.

Date: 2023-07-11 06:21 pm (UTC).
I'll probably try to get either Jean or the Living Tribunal. Don't think I'll have enough boxes to go for both.
Maybe the second batch too. Those cards don't seem too great, but I don't have any of them, so..
Legion or a Darkhawk variant are tempting, too.

Date: 2023-07-11 08:39 pm (UTC)*(I also wonder if giving High Evolutionary to more people means he'll be adjusted with the patch. I don't actually see HE as a problem but a lot of people do).
Really looking forward to next week. Echo seems solid (and she's a counter to Cosmo...not that I see much Cosmo). Iron Lad is one I think a lot of us have wanted for a while. Kang isn't especially good but he's been locked at 6K tokens for ages and this seems like the better option.
I am a little worried that's I've already mentally spent several months of saved resources before the first update is even live. What if the 8/8 spotlight is Zabu, Galactus, and an awesome new card* and I don't have anything left to open?
*Or however they handle the first week of a season. I can't imagine they'll spotlight the previous month's season pass card right away like they do in the token shop.

Date: 2023-07-11 10:51 am (UTC)I want to ask here for non-urgent assistance, or if someone could point me in the right direction at least.
Here, it's after July 4th. Once July 4th ends, that's when my friend circles...some of them get Halloween-Obsessed.
Not "Here's a cute little bedsheet ghost with a smiley face' obsessed.
I'm talking about "Yeah, it's the season or Orange, and death, and fear and terror and mutilation and slimyness and vile imagery and here's a shot of this rotting corpse and zombies and jump scares and horror and doom and death, death, death!" (say the last three words in increasing ecstatic joy, and you get what I mean).
Honestly, I'm all for letting people be even if it pollutes my feed for the next (checks online) 112 days.
But these are the same people that cry and moan the moment they see anything Christmas-esque after October 31st but before December 15th.
I have tried to point out their hypocrisy by posting pictures of when Halloween Decorations are up in August, but to no avail. (August to Halloween is usually more time than November 1st to December 25th).
If they left it there, it'd be fine, but then they drag their stuff into Christmastime, trying to 'Dark and Edgy' the holiday. You know, comics artists do if what Santa does with Mrs. Claus/The Reindeer/The Elves in the off-season, or posing those (admittedly very creepy) Elf on a Shelf dolls in 'adult' positions. (I saw one who had an Elf snorting fake rails off a de-clothed Barbie, and that's the milder ones).
It's...kinda really tasteless. My life's not perfect either but I like Christmastime so I'm not going to shit on anyone else's good cheer.
So, I wanted to try something this year, to flip the script. These types of folk always like to 'dark and edgy' Christmas to screw with the spirit of it. What I want to know is...how do we Wholesome-ize Halloween? To screw with the spirit of it?

The ulule crownfunding for Fragments is about to end. It'll probably reach the goal, as it was significantly lowered. I wish it did better, but that's the game.
Fragments will be an anthology of comics created by Maxime Garbarini and various artists. Garbarini already did Heroics, a tale of european super heroes during WWII, and he does a shitload of great X-Men fan art.
Summer anime
Bucket list of the dead episode 1 was pretty good. I've droped the manga, but if the animation quality stays at this level, I guess I'll finish the story through the anime.
Mushoku Tensei is still beautiful, although there might be a drop in animation.
Not sure if I'll try anything else. I still have Times Shadow and Gridman to watch.
King Ohger is very good. It may turn into my favorite Sentai series of all time. I really appreciate that the characters are not overshadowed by the red one or by the 6th one.
Marvel Snap
Not sure if I'm right to wait for the new boxes system, but after I opened like 20 boxes getting nothing but variants, I decided to hoard.
Not even sure I will go for the first series of cards, since you need 40 boxes to be 100% certain to get the one you want.
I'm still enjoying surprising people with a round 6 Shanna who boosts Mojo, Ant-Man and Dazzler. That deck is not effective against the Shuri/Red Skull types, though.

Date: 2023-07-11 03:07 pm (UTC)It still feels more like a political thriller with random sentai moments thrown in because they feel they have to for the sake of the franchise, than anything else.
Kaguragi is such a OTT performance (and the actor is not underselling a single moment of it, he's practically lining up scenery for a good chewing) that it shouldn't work, but his duplicity is so off the charts that it sort of DOES work.
Jeremie being the cryptic storyteller who is getting frustrated because he has to keep dealing with impatient people who just want him to get to the bloody point is AWESOME!
The Bugnarok seem to be the least effective villains of any series ever, but they already have managed to conquer one of the realms by using it's ruler's political arrogance against him and seem happy enough to let the inter-realm squabbling do most of their work for them.
Not too fond of super-duper King-Ohger gattai because it has readily identifiable legs hanging over it's shoulders, which just looks weird, but other than that it's still firing on all cylinders.

I never care much about the mecha in sentai shows. They always end up more overstuffed than a Liefeld character.

Date: 2023-07-11 12:36 pm (UTC)The only problem is the snails everywhere.
Went out for a country walk with the dog on the weekend, which was nice.
Though the attempted picnic was marred by an act of canine sandwich theft.
Found some issues of Young All-Stars while looking through the local comic shop's back issues bit. Amazingly cheap for their age (take THAT, after-market inflation!).
But I'm conflicted, partly because of their age. If I bought them, I'd be too afraid of damaging them to ever get them out the packaging, which defies the whole point of buying them...
That and the certain knowledge that if I did go with intent to really purchase them, they'd disappear.
... this'd be so much easier if DC just released collected editions of things that weren't just Batman once in a while.
Also they've got some of Bendis's Miles Morales run, from post-Secret Wars.
Conflicted about that, too. Considering it, but... ehh... a lot of Bendis's stuff with him was kind of directionless, and also extremely Bendis-y.
Secret Invasion episode 3.
... I think I hate Gravik slightly less this episode. I still don't like him at all, but he's less infuriating to watch this episode.
Which is... slightly worrying given what he does in it? But maybe it's because someone successfully calls him on his BS, and Talos stabs him.
Takaratomy revealed an upcoming (like, next year) Transformers toy is an homage to the Diaclone line no-one had done yet, the bright yellow Toyota Hi-lux mould they used to make Trailbreaker.
Only this one's a Decepticon. Surprising.
(Initial flubs with the Romanization had his name come out "Ligolas". Sadly, it turned out to be Riggorus instead, so we'll skip the LOTR jokes. *sigh*)
Now all we need is the lilac coloured one...
And a surprise Legacy reveal was a version of Medix from Rescue Bots, of all characters.

Date: 2023-07-12 01:35 am (UTC)Fables #14-17: Storybook Love
Perhaps one of the most frustrating arcs early on in Fables, Storybook Love is a storyline with some of the best highs and character moments. However, it’s also hurt by some rather creepy, sweeviness that makes you want to facepalm so hard it’ll put a dent in your skull.
This is the storyline that officially gets Snow and Bigby together, technically. It progresses Prince Charming’s story and arc with setting himself up for life. We see Bluebeard finally making his move on Bigby and Snow, which has been brewing since the fifth issue. We also get the big confrontation with Goldilocks, an absolutely stellar climax that is so brutal that is hilarious in the best of ways. All the characterization and writing in these parts are really good, though maybe with a few stretches in logic and lacking detail in Charming’s plans and targeting of Bluebeard.
However, two things really hold this arc back. The first is a brief scene between Snow White and Bigby where he explains why he is attracted to her. There’s a lot of it that comes down to originally being a beast and having different standards, but that’s not the issue. It’s how he says she is the one scent he can never ignore and that he can always tell what she’s doing, how she’s feeling, and where she is, even going into detail about it. It’s rather creepy and even with the comic acknowledging it, the writer really shouldn’t have been so detailed.
But then the major problem: the final two pages. It turns out that Snow White is pregnant due to having sex with Bigby… while under a mind control/altering potion. It’s so gross and disgusting, essentially making the two victims of unintentional sexual assault since they had no choice or ability to decide on having sex. It’s such a violation that I’m utterly baffled at this move. I know the writer wants these two together and to eventually have kids, but come on! The foundation was being set. Just spend an issue or two with them in the background dating and then they have kids by accident! It’s just so wrong with this decision.
Mark Buckingham is back on art duties and his work is great here. He’s definitely getting really good with layouting and panels, like the emblem format for the fight between Charming and Bluebeard. It makes for a far more dynamic-looking series, especially when he gets to draw an action sequence. No complaints at all, just praise for an arc that at least looks fantastic from start to finish.
Storybook Love is almost there. It’s almost perfect. If just had some minor plot quibbles or even smell issue, that would be one thing. However, that gross direction really hampers an otherwise great storyline. Thankfully, the next, much bigger arc will wash the taste out of this.

Date: 2023-07-12 02:52 am (UTC)I'd forgotten that particular aspect of Snow and Bigby's relationship.
I'll never forget a particular Bigby moment later on, though.

Date: 2023-07-12 10:11 am (UTC)Also, it feels worse in hindsight because of WHO he's talking to.
I'm not actually a "keep politics out of comics" guy but sometimes real world parallels make things pretty uncomfortable and are handed poorly enough that they dip into "bad X-Men run" territory. At least it's a passing moment so it doesn't go full "Larry Correia* novel" levels of insane.
*I actually enjoyed the Grimnoir Chronicles books but the Monster Hunters International series is absolutely deranged. I know that really has very little to do with Fables beyond having werewolves and right-wing authors but MHI deserves to be roasted at every opportunity.

It’s not Dreamworks’ best film by a long shot, it goes by a bit too quickly in places and if it did take off I imagine there’d probably be some discourse over the depiction of mermaids... but dangit I had so much fun with this film, between the action and the colours and the characters and the locale and GAH I’d love to see more of these characters and this world. I really hope Dreamworks doesn’t abandon it, or at the very least I hope they don’t view its financial failure as proof nobody likes female protagonists headlining films. Speaking of which, it’s utterly bizarre to me this is Dreamworks’ first and only film so far where the main protagonist/titular character is female.

Recently I mentioned finding it odd that so many people hate Ghostbusters 2 online (I have never met these people IRL). I'm not immune; I stil can't decide in Iron Man 2 and Quantum of Solace are actually bad movies or if they just failed to surpass expectations like the previous IM and Bond movies.
