NS: That Medic is a bloody Spy!

MARVEL Studios’ Secret Invasion has come and gone! Have you seen it? What did you think? Feel free to talk about the show below, and as always be wary of spoilers (which you can tag using the ROT13 cipher).

Date: 2023-07-30 01:48 pm (UTC)Using a short montage in the final episode to speed run what should have been the actual story was certainly a choice.

Date: 2023-07-30 10:24 pm (UTC)See, that lack of faithfulness to the original was a selling point to me, as I was not a fan of BMB's SI to begin with (apart from the Hercules run-- that was sheer genius), and I'm very glad that we didn't get a set up for the equally (to me) unpalatable Dark Reign.

Date: 2023-07-30 11:31 pm (UTC)Civil War and Secret Invasion are very linked in my head.
Comic CW was a conflict that probably should have been resolved with discussion but immediately devolved into violence (because Millar).
Comic SI far too much talking (because Bendis) for a straightforward alien body snatcher plot.
Neither MCU adaption really fixed the original’s problems but the CW movie streamlined things enough that some were removed whereas the SI show just kept adding more nonsense it couldn’t be bothered to explain.
And yeah, I loved that Herc’s reaction to a holy war is “okay, how about our gods just beat up their gods?”

Date: 2023-07-30 03:16 pm (UTC)Which is odd, because I wasn't terribly up on the show meself.
I don't think it was great, and I'd be hard pressed to even say I thought it was good, but as far as Marvel's stuff goes it's still not as bad as The Dark World or Iron Man 3.
... I am still quite pissed Maria and Soren were fridged, though.
Am also a little unclear how that was in any way an invasion.
A lot of good actors giving it serious effort.
And the opening theme is annoyingly catchy.
Bit odd that in a show supposedly about Skrulls, with a lot of Skrull characters, we don't learn much about them as a people.
G'iah ending the show so ludicrously superpowered she could be a Jeph Loeb creation was certainly a decision someone made.
(Nick Fury gathered up samples from everyone who fought in the big battle in Endgame why? What was his plan there? Because if it was "stop anyone else from using them" seems like immediately destroying the samples would've been the better idea.)

Date: 2023-07-30 04:05 pm (UTC)There were some pretty solid performances but I doubt we'll see any of the new characters again.
(Shame about Sonya. She was fun)
G'iah's powers do seem indicative of how poorly thought out this was.
Messing with gamma powers tends to go badly (I guess that can be handwaved by pointing out Srulls handle radiation differently than humans)
Shuri took ages to crack her brother's power set but I guess she isn't as smart as some random lab tech.
I really hope they cured the debilitating medical condition that comes with Ghost's powers.
Speaking of dangerous powers to have...the Extremis? Really?
Given the number of tech-based heroes running around, it might have been smarter to build a Super Adaptoid and hope it doesn't go all Ultron on you. Vision has a better power set than Ghost anyway.

Date: 2023-07-30 04:03 pm (UTC)Oliva Coleman was the best part of course.
And mildly surprised that we didn't have a thing of the newly freed Rhodey going "so where's Tony?"
Oh my god, yes. This!
Date: 2023-07-30 05:34 pm (UTC)You have Bruce Banner show up, checking on Rhodey who is in the final stages of discharge after being cleared (from his ordeal under Skrull captivity.) Rhodey, in a wheelchair, is surprised but happy to see him. Rhodey complains that he doesn't remember anything after the crash at the airport and woke up in this hospital paralyzed. Bruce says he missed out on a lot and that he'll fill him in. Rhodey asks why Tony wasn't there to meet him. Que a stricken look on Bruce's face. The camera pulls back and looks upon the two of them from the other side of a glass window or wall. Bruce kneels, to be eye level with Rhodey in the chair, and says something to Rhodey that we don't hear but clearly hits Rhodey hard. Rhodey puts his head in his hands, shoulders shuddering, and Bruce reaches over to hug him. Fade out.
BUT that didn't happen and couldn't happen in this show because the writing simply isn't there.

Date: 2023-07-30 10:25 pm (UTC)Profoundly disappointed in every way but one
Date: 2023-07-30 05:18 pm (UTC)I hated practically every plot point in this. I hate what it did with Fury (master spy, lulz!). I hate how it treated Maria Hill and Talos and Ross and Rhodey. Scratch that, I hate how it treated every single character in the show (except Sonya and there I'm mad this wasn't more of a real spy show with Fury and Sonya being a dynamic duo.)
The show felt low-rent, an insult given the reported 200+ million cost. The pacing was plodding, the direction and staging uninspired. It was show with the 'threat' of the extinction of the human race as the stakes and I wasn't, even for a moment, concerned about the outcome or who was going to make it out alive. Why should I be when not one person in the show was particularly worried.
This was a disaster on every level and I'm officially done with Kevin Feige. You job, sir, is to prevent **** like this from happening and yet nearly every recent project under your watch has been ill-considered, poorly made, and an insult to the talent in the shows. behind the camera, and the fans for whom these characters have become 'real' and worthy of emotional investment. Sir, we've gone from people crying in theaters during Infinity War and End Game to the laughing stocks of She-Hulk and this... whatever this show is.
I loved WandaVision, Loki, Moon Knight, Hawkeye, (most of) Falcon and Winter Soldier, the first few episodes of Ms. Marvel, two episodes of She-Hulk, and none of Secret Invasion. That, Mr. Feige, is a disturbing trend line.
