Date: 2023-08-08 10:47 am (UTC)Fables #36-41: The Homelands
And so, we come to the big arc. We finally go to the lands where the Fables came from, their Homelands. Boy Blue is on a mission to take out the Adversary, find a way to save Pinocchio, and find where the love of his life, Red Riding Hood, is. It’s a tale of adventure, world-building, clashes, and one hell of a big reveal as we find out who are true villain is.
Having won an Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story (the last time the award would be given out), it’s completely easy to understand why. The Homelands is a stellar arc, chronicling the adventures Boy Blue goes on. It’s a good journey as he struggles and uses his wit to beat out foe after foe, interacting with people along the way, and dealing with the shocking revelations that come out of it in the end. He succeeds, but it’s still bittersweet in the end. I think maybe a little more time needed to be spent on his reactions to certain events, but that’s about it.
What truly makes the arc really good is two factors: the expanding on the world and the Adversary themself. We finally get a good look at the Homelands and what it is like under the rule of this empire. We see it through the eyes of its citizens, soldiers, and Boy Blue, making it feel more real and mundane in a way. I love some of the interactions going on, like with the Gob soldiers in the first issue, that help paint the world. Others introduced, even briefly, are memorable in their own ways, like the Snow Queen. I almost wish we saw more of it, but given the tight pacing and focus, the creators wanted to keep the plot moving without it dragging.
Then there is the Adversary. Now, I was actually spoiled on who they were a long time before I even originally read this arc. So, in the back of my mind, I wasn’t sure how it could be possible that somebody like Geppetto of all people could be the big bad. Then, when I finally got to the reveal when I first read it and even now, it all made sense. The way it was expertly crafted, how it came together, progressed so slowly, and grew into this monstrous outcome made perfect sense. It’s so fully realized and yet delivered in such an understated manner that it makes the entire reveal and what is, essentially, an exposition dump so memorable. The final two issues of this arc alone would make this one of the best in the series even if the past issues were nowhere as good.
There was also a brief intermission issue in the middle of this storyline, where we cut back to Fabletown to see what’s happening. And like the rest of the arc, it’s just as engaging. New characters, new reveals and twists, and more that set up for exciting things down the pipeline. Lan Medina drew this one and it's probably their best issue so far. They really nail the expressiveness of the characters, the layouting, and some terrific, striking imagery.
And speaking of artwork, the art team’s work on this storyline was absolutely splendid. Mark Buckingham really is doing some of the best art of his life on this series. It’s such a treat to read this series for just how creative his pages can be to read in how they flow, move, and breathe. He can make settings larger than life and scenes so tense. I love how he is able to switch up his style just enough to give certain areas and scenes a different feeling, like the dragon’s world or the knight battles. Extra props have to be given to Daniel Vozzo who is doing miracles with his colors, enhancing every scenes and mood so well. Geppetto’s flashbacks are treat in that regard.
I have minor quibbles with this arc, but the fact I could probably write an entire essay on the execution of Geppetto’s reveal makes things feel so trivial. This was excellent, one of the best of the series so far. The worldbuilding, characterization, mood, art, and more made this a joy to read and dive into. While it doesn’t hit me in the same way as March of the Wooden Soldiers had done, I love this arc.
Fables #42-45: Arabian Nights (and Days)
After a string of really damn good arcs, we hit upon a bit of a speed bump. In this four part arc, following up on an offhand comment from the Adversary, the Arabian Fables are under attack and have sent Sinbad, his slaves, and advisor to Fabletown to discuss an alliance and potential refugee crisis coming. Due to a bit of cultural shock, Old King Cole steps up to help.
As a whole, the story isn’t particularly bad. It’s a less intense arc from last time with some exceptions, but it’s more about continuing to build the world and its characters. I like expanding into the Arabian Fables, getting an idea of their culture, and how things are going with them. I like where Boy Blue’s story is going and how he is dealing with the fallout from last arc. We see Charming finally unravel from taking the job and some interesting, soap opera drama between him and Beauty. I like the small character moments with Red Riding Hood, Flycatcher, Bufkin, and more. The worldbuilding and use of the D’jinn is excellent. There’s a lot to like here and most of it is executed very well. I like the twists and turns this arc took.
But then there’s the biggie thing about this arc that makes me raise an eyebrow. It’s the depiction of the Arabian Fables themselves, their dialogue, and culture. Now, it’s not like everything is bad or particularly inaccurate to the original stories from what I am aware of. The cultural shock aspect is perfectly fine and understandable, including potential hostilities that may arise from it. Everyone is treated humanely and fairly by the story, not looked down upon for their culture or faith outside of one aspect. It’s not completely bad as one may think.
But there are some things that don’t exactly sit right. The certain phrases and words used by the Arabian Fables feel like buzzwords Middle Eastern villains and stereotypes would use, like infidel and western devils. Yusuf looks like a stereotype. There’s some casual racism and ugliness from some the characters that while isn’t very blatant, is still bad. This is definitely an arc that hasn’t particularly aged in a lot of little details and points. I cannot possibly identify all the issues with it, but the ones that I can see are not great.
Mark Buckingham’s art is still great though. It’s not as visually stunning as the previous arc in changing up its styles or creative with its layouts, but it’s not really needed. This is a more laid back arc taking place in just Fabletown with some exceptions. The characters are still well drawn and expressive, the pages are laid out and flow well, and the more magical aspects depicted are exceptional to look at. One detail that I think really shines is Buckingham’s use of space with borders, filling them with visually fitting imagery for the characters in the scene or the mood. It makes the pages far more fulfilling to read, even if its just essentially dressing.
Arabian Nights (and Days) is an arc that’s iffy to me. Outside of some pacing, I think it’s still an engaging tale that is much like The Mean Seasons. It has a lot of great characterization, moments, world-building, and serves as a good break from the action we’ve had. However, unlike that arc, I feel it has aged poorly in some of its depictions of Middle Easterns and with its casual racism. Not to the degree of some series and stories from this era, but enough to make you pause a few times.
I have now gone through every part of the series I read before long ago. From here on out, I'm in unknown waters. This is gonna be interesting. Next arc I'm reading, I'm taking a quick break from the mainline series to return to Jack of Fables for a mini arc. Then I'll be back for more mini arcs as I approach #50.

Finally gave in and played that Miles Morales: Spider-Man that's been sitting around for a year.
Fun, though the combat's a learning curve.
Muscle memory's still back in 2003, so I keep pressing the wrong button expecting to dodge...
Ain't half a short game, though. It's like PS2 game length.
The pigeon quest was unexpectedly fun. ... but the way Miles is grabbing the birds while they're in flight, with shower of feathers, sure looks like he's killing the poor things, not just catching them...
Went on an interesting excursion to far-off places (th' next city over!) on Friday.
Found the Epic Collection of Dark Phoenix.
(Our local only does the non-Claremont Epic Collections! Oh, the sights and... well, more sights!)
Whew, that's a lot of Claremont alright.
Dark Phoenix, Days of Future Past, Nightcrawler's mom trapping everyone in Dante's Inferno (because Kurt killed his brother for reasons the story doesn't fully elaborate on)! And Kitty.
... actually, early Kitty's far more tolerable than later Kitty. Maybe because she hasn't had time to develop any of the particular traits that are so annoying yet?
Though Claremont still gets the ball rolling with Storm's jealousy over spending time with Stevie.
Oh, and Professor X saying Wolverine has "leadership qualities". Yeah, right, pal.
And, uh... about Dark Phoenix:
Now, I'm not up on the complicated snarl of retcons that is Phoenix's history, but I had thought the whole thing about Phoenix and Jean being separate beings only came around after X-Factor, yet here in the final issue characters are already talking about Jean being possessed by it and treating it like a separate entity.
Is that what the issues always said, or is this collection using some edited rerelease or something?

Date: 2023-08-08 11:38 am (UTC)I’m at the “assembling light office furniture” stage of recovery. :)
So many indictments, so few consequences.:(
I haven’t seen the new Superman cartoon beyond the pilot and some miscellaneous clips but – just based on those – I really hope it gets a physical release and doesn’t remain trapped on whatever DC’s parent company’s streaming app is called this week.
Saw GotG3 and – while I have some issues with specific characters* – it’s the most I’ve enjoyed an MCU movie in a while. It’s a little funny that, after ages of people speculating about who Nathan Fillion would play, he was just some random security guard. High Evolutionary might be the worst person in the MCU.
*I think I already said this in relation to the Eternals (especially the Titan Eternals) but its baffling that they keep introducing characters who are most interesting because of their relationship to Thanos AFTER he’s dead. Even when Thanos was alive, they shifted the Drax/Thanos grudge to Drax/Ronan and ignored any connection to Mar-Vell. Speaking of Titans and Mar-Vell, I don’t know if Genis should be more offended that he’s the only CM that doesn’t get any recognition in the MCU or Phyla should be more bothered that one of these kids stole her identity,
I discovered The Craft is on Hulu and I feel obligated to watch it as an X-Men Evolution fan. Always nice to spot Breckin Meyer in his natural habitat; a 90s chick flick. Prior to the ritual, Sarah was the only one with powers, right? It just feels like the other three would have been fine mooching off her until Nancy snapped. Bonnie wanting to be pretty and Rochelle humiliating a racist just don’t seem as bad as Sarah robbing a guy of his free will but luckily Nancy existing means the movie forgives that.
Finally got around to watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and – like every other Trigger show – it left me wanting to watch Gurren Lagann again instead.
I enjoyed the new episode of Futurama. I’m a little fuzzy on Fry and Leela’s relationship status and I think the writers are too, though.
Well, the good news is the second case with Marvel connected me with someone who actually tried to help and some of my missing books are back in my library. The bad news is that those missing comics were only ever meant to be examples and I really just wanted them to complete the synch between my Comixology and Unlimited library. Since an easy fix apparently isn’t an option, I’m going to have to be looking for holes in my digital collection instead of reading comics in my free time for a while.
I haven’t had a chance to do much more than give a quick flip through the new Marvel RPG but its always interesting who they choose to include in these things. Marvel hasn’t really been pushing Amadeus Cho in ages but Brawn gets an entry. As does Night Nurse. And Reptil. They’ve got at least five Spider-People (maybe not entirely the ones people expect)* but no Novas. Clint is the only Hawkeye. Nat is the only Black Widow. Janet is the only Wasp. Robbie is the only Ghost Rider. There’s an Ant-Man and a Giant Man but neither is Hank. The X-Men’s Angel is another notable missing Silver Age character. I mean, obviously they had to leave something for the expansions but there are some weird omissions. They have both Wolverines, though; like, they actually list Laura as “Wolverine” and not “X-23” and that’s a something them seem to have trouble doing IN THE COMICS.
*I like the idea of “power sets” as shorthand but it’d be nice to see more characters like Jessica and Julia since they have significantly different powers than Peter and co.
RE Snap:
I was looking at my collection Thursday and thinking its wild that I’m only missing a dozen cards. Granted that number will be going up next month because every single new card is a pool 5 card and only one (maybe two) of the spotlights is worth messing with. Loki season (September) looks more promising than the last couple X-Men seasons anyway.
Unlocks:
Galactus Baby Variant – Season Pass (Free). Do you think he eats moons or would those be a choking hazard?
Mister Sinister Phoenix Variant – Conquest shop. Obviously. I spent all month working toward this one and cut it pretty close.
(Thought about buying Mirage but the weekend reward for using her was pretty underwhelming especially compared to last week)
Because I have what I wanted from Conquest and have been dropping a lot on the ladder (didn’t even reach 90), I’ve mostly been farming boosters lately. It hit me that Sinister was the last card I could fully upgrade (I could have ten splits of the base America card but I care about aesthetics, darn it!) so it seemed like time to play some truly awful decks in Conquest ... as if credits weren’t the actual bottleneck. On the bright side, it looks like Conquest Odin and Wolverine are both on the horizon and I have plenty of boosters for both.
(I should never play Conquest right before rollover again. I never got to play out my last ticket because the other players took the maximum time and refused to retreat when losing.)
Back down to 53 after reset.
The Thursday updates were buffs* all around. I’m particularly happy about Hawkeye and Absorbing Man. It seems on-brand that buffed Vision is still just small enough to phase through those Shang-Chi punches. It’s a little weird that Hulk Buster armor is currently on par with the Phoenix Force; sure it can’t move or resurrect cards but its still a +5 to another card for 3 energy (as opposed to +5 to another card for 4 energy … and ten bucks). I feel like the biggest improvement is the pop-up that TELLS you there’s been an update since I sometimes don’t find out until I notice a deck is off.
*Well, Captain Marvel getting cheaper and weaker is debatable. I personally like her with discard decks (where her cost is irrelevant because Hela plays her for free) and I know a lot of people like her with Shuri (which you can still do but CM will be 10 power bouncing around on the last turn instead of 12). Still, the new Zabu synergy is worth considering. Also…maybe THIS will be the card that finally makes Cerebro Five work (I’m sure it won’t).
(Also, most Conquest victories reward more medals. I’d prefer it if they just lowered the shop prices back to what they were.)
They released the new Snap “roadmap” last week and, unsurprisingly, I have thoughts.

COMING SOON
PC Launch - I was a bit confused when I saw one of the items was “PC launch” because I know the game is on Steam. Apparently its just an attempt to make that version not a lesser version of the mobile one.
Twitch Drops – If my experience with the occasional Eternal Twitch Drops is any indication, this will be tedious and unreliable.
Seasonal Audio – The sound in this game is an assault on the ears and I play on mute.
Card Upgrade Improvements – “Multi-Upgrade” saves a person a few taps; I guess that’s something.
The idea of exchanging gold (arguably the most valuable in-game currency) for boosters (the least valuable in-game currency) is downright insulting, though.
Conquest Polish – All the Conquest changes seem like genuine improvements. Especially the part where it doesn’t repeatedly remind me that I lost and lets us skip long animations (something the standard mode has done for a while).
Infinity Rank Revamp – No real info. Could be very good or very bad.
Global Matchmaking - No real info. I assume this means less bots.
Considering that we still don’t have the ability to target specific boosters, a dedicated playtest mode, ect, I’m skeptical that we’ll ever get most of the “IN DEVELOPMENT” stuff. “IN CONCEPT” is almost certainly a pipe dream.
A few things that I did find notable from those lists...
Spotlight Caches will have a “Hold to Open” option and I wish more things in this game had this to prevent accidentally opening stuff.
The 50 Token reward in Collectors Reserves will soon (today?) be replaced by a 50/50 chance at 100 Tokens or a Gold Conquest Ticket. I’m not actually sure if this is an improvement or not. The Token reward is basically the same but getting 100 doesn’t feel as bad as getting 50 even if you’re getting the same number of tokens on average. I guess the Conquest tickets are a plus; even if you lose immediately, you still get a minimal number of medals you can use to buy stuff in the Conquest shop.
I’ve run into this in other games and I still don’t get the benefit of Guilds in games that don’t have cooperative elements. This is “IN CONCEPT” so I’m not sure the developers know either.
PS: Lack of news about a series drop makes me think nothing is moving down a pool today.

Via a second hand bookstore I got the first three volumes of Fables Deluxe. Now they don't have a complete set, but they do have the normal volumes five, six and seven, and the Deluxe volume eight. I'll get those then fill in the gaps on Ebay as cheaply as I can.
A Twitch channel was broadcasting a Street Fighter 6 tournament. One of the contestants played Chun-Li....and forgot he had a nude mod installed so. Perhaps not the sort of thing you want to reveal to an audience of thousands.
I've been watching Superman: The Animated Series. It's not a bad show, but it's less iconic (for want of a better word) than Batman was.
So far Lex Luthor has implicitly murdered three people which is impressive for a children's show.
Saw that the library had volume one of Jupiter's Legacy. Figured I might as well see if it's a good Mark Millar comic or edgy nonsense. Turns out it collects a later miniseries, so I don't think I'll read it.
A while ago I read the first three volumes of Berserk, and recently I got the next three from the library. I only vaguely remember what happened before but thankfully it starts a lengthy multi-volume flashback.
....man this really is dark fantasy...
All-in-all it seems interesting.

Date: 2023-08-15 12:47 am (UTC)(I really hate the format but maybe with considering)
I like the DC Animated Universe a lot but they made some odd choices with Superman that keep him from being in the conversation for best the best version of Superman the way BtAS Batman is arguably the best Batman. He may not be out there snapping necks but he’s still a lot angrier than most Supermen. He certainly doesn’t feel like the most powerful Superman, considering how often he was the first one taken out in a fight in Justice League. The glimpses we get of him and Lois after the series ends indicate that (a) Lois still isn’t in on the secret and (b) she’s dating Superman while Clark is just a work friend.
That last one was apparently executive meddling and the writers wanted Lois to know.
(Not to say Conroy’s Batman was without issues. Making him a bitter old man in Batman Beyond undermines a lot of his later growth in Justice League. And I think we all would rather forget the Batgirl relationship)

Marvel Snap unlocks:
Daken (season pass). I will probably put him in one of my destruction decks.
Galactus (Token shop). Am yet to use him successfully, unlike the other Galactus players I come up against.
Thanos (Spotlight cache). Refuse to add him to a deck on principle.
Quinjet blueprint variant (mystery variant).
Mastermold and Apocalypse variants (Spotlight chache). I think the Apocalypse variant is an X of Swords variant. He has a rad looking sword any way.
Red Skull variant (Collector's reserve).
Mantis Empyre variant (Token shop).

Ah, the Infinity Warps. Random nonsense just showing what mashed-up heroes look like almost completely unrelated to the main plot of all that Infinity Nonsense.
And yet most of them are still a damn sight better than the main story.

It's kind of odd how so much Spider-Gwen stuff now seems to be about multiverse shenanigans, rather than just regular AU shenanigans.

Date: 2023-08-08 01:22 pm (UTC)Went to Gencon for the first time this weekend. Had a lot of fun. Spent a lot of money. Picked up some games that haven’t been released yet
On the flight back home I watched the Legion of Superheroes animated movie DC did a year or two ago. It was not good. I usually roll my eyes at people whose criticism is “who is this for” but really, I don’t know who they were making it for. The villain is foreshadowed so poorly that everybody else looks like morons for not seeing it. Braniac Five is supposed to be smart but can’t even spare one word to Supergirl to attempt to stop the fight. Every scene, no matter how important or body horror filled is played with the same tone.
Although I don’t see how anyone who watched the teaser scene and didn’t just see the screenshot thought that was about Doctor Manhattan. Two craters of two different sizes caused by two different attacks would have to look like that, and it didn’t look that much like Manhattan’s symbol to begin with

WotC doing that with regards to AI art was a surprise to me. Usually when WotC does something with their 5e/OneDnD non-design, when there's fan outcry or fans pointing out their playtest design makes something unplayable, they usually double down. Because WotC's 5th ed stuff is normally "we don't need to lay out rules or player usable content: there's homebrew and your DM will figure it out instead of us game designers, even if that is literally our job."

(Guess we're truly back to Wolverine getting all the merch again. Ugh.)
Though the odd one out is Goliath.

Date: 2023-08-08 11:54 pm (UTC)State government is trying to do an end run around the people, by making it harder for amendment issues regarding the state constitution to be passed. Right now it's a 50+1 needed to pass, but if passed, it automatically requires a threshold of 60% or more to pass. Not to mention that any citizen who wishes to place a amendment forth on the ballot would need to collect 5% of signatures from all 88 counties instead of 44. Which means just one county can halt it and force it to start again.
Not to mention they also want to eliminate the 10 day cure period of any signatures deemed faulty by the secretary of state. So you had better hope your signatures are spot on first time, though I doubt that'd stop a determined SoS like LaRose from finding ways of invalidating them...)
All of this of course is because we're looking towards voting on abortion rights protections being added to the constitution (to prevent the sort of chicanery other red or red-leaning states have tried since the Supreme Court decision last year) in the November elections. So there's been all sorts of "lovely" ads stating that if Issue 1 isn't passed, it'll be abortions and gender affirming surgery for the wee ones and all that self-righteous moralistic hooey that is spouted in order to get pearl clutching going on.
Oh, and this whole August election was already legally hinky due to the very party wanting to pass this Issue 1 being the same party who had also banned August elections earlier this year. But the State Supreme Court (which by the way has the son of the Governor as one of the justices, so yeah...) in a 4-3 decision said the Constitution gives the legislature the right to set elections. So...*throws up hands*
that's also a thing...
