He feels like the opposite of a lot of fictional LGBTQ+ people, who maybe have to walk on eggshells a little bit, be nice, be polite, be vanilla, be mainstream, be just exactly queer enough to make everyone feel comfortable. And hey, in the face of that imposter syndrome I mentioned, maybe I could do with a little more of Solem’s “yeah, and?” attitude in my own life. -- Al Ewing

Kobak Never-Held? More like Kobak Always-Held, amiright? Bang chicka bow bow.

...I'll see myself out.

"Weren't expecting character development and backstory in your anthology one-shot, were ya? You thought it was just going to be fluff."

Despite the promise of the cover, this issue contained a shocking, nay appalling lack of Roberto.
Boo!

Once more, the cover is full of lies. No Bishop or Paylocke either.

I mean, I can live without Bishop or Kwannon, but that cover suggested Roberto which was not provided.

"No Roberto.
Zero out of ten. ... thousand."

(But we do get a story about Jean and Emma?)

You don't want to read about Bishop? What about the minority of people who are genocidal murderers?

To be fair, "Jean and Emma go on a carnival date" was queer as hell.

I'm not wild about Bishop, and wasn't even before what was done to him in the 00s.
(Traitorous as it may be for someone from the 90s to say, giant guns just... just don't do it for me. Never have.
I can read about Bishop, sure, but I can go without.
Same with ninja.)

It was, but Emma's not exactly lacking for presence even on her slow days.
So giving over a portion of the anthology to the rich white Bostonian feels like just a bit of waste of space that could've been given to others.
Unless it's Jean who's providing the queer subtext there.
(And if that's the case, the shipping goggles say "Jean / Wanda" or nothing!)

I hope I’m not being ignorant, but it’s to my understanding MARVEL Voices is meant to give a voice to both creators and characters of colour, ethnicity, faith, sex, etc. But the X-Men don’t exist in real life. I know they’re meant to be a stand-in for persecuted minorities, but who exactly is this book giving a voice to? It just seems like more X-Men.

Marvel's Voices is still about allowing minority creators to tell stories, but now they are grouping the stories via franchise. They did a Marvel's Voices: Spider-Verse and a Marvel's Voices: Wakanda, too.

Ah, but as you see, this is not 'MARVEL Voices' but 'Marvel's Voices', a COMPLETELY different brand! Or a cover typo, who knows.

Marvel Voices is for the characters

Marvel's Voices is for the creators

IIRC it was Jay Edidin who pointed this out but that is some very confusing branding. I think we're to assume mutants made this comic.

I don't think anyone actually believes it was written by mutants.

Wait, are you talking about Icon's branding breakdown? I have no idea if he's serious. That's a question for Icon.

I see from a little research that Al Ewing came out as bi in 2021. Didn't know that about him. In one respect it's a little odd to see him in a special like this, since there's not exactly an absence of his work elsewhere at Marvel, but if he pulls some of the not-so-known names into the spotlight, then good on that. (Squinting a bit at that cover, I see a couple other names I already knew, too.)
