So the latest DC film has been dropped into theaters with minimal fanfare and it looks like it's going to be a flop. It's a shame as in my opinion as it's a solid film. The dynamic with Jaime and his family was a lot of fun and I wouldn't mind seeing them again. The superhero stuff was fairly standard (I did like the use of body horror though) but I appreciate that even though there's levity they don't treat the fantastical as a farce.

I really liked it! I saw it in theatres and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. It was great seeing Hispanic/Latino characters front and center instead of being goofy sidekicks. The action was great, made me think of a Kamen rider or sentai series but with a decent budget. Very strong third act which usually a problem with superhero movies and a send-off for the villains that I haven't seen before. One part made me feel especially emotional, it's a sincere film that doesn't undercut its concepts or characters. An unapologetic superhero movie with the strongest sense of family I've seen, this is what the Shazam movies should have been. It feels like people want this movie to fail and i don't know why. You don't have to worry about what universe it's in, it stands on it's own.

A lot of it comes down to the Snyder cult hoping that everything in the DCU crashes and burns so the Snyderverse will be "restored" (which will never happen regardless). They also think any of the recent DC projects flopping is a victory against James Gunn even though he has nothing to do with them and they were in production before he came on board.

The funny thing is Snyder promoted this one on twitter.

And on the other side of it, a lot of non Snyder fans just want to close out the whole DCEU era already. It is less that people are wanting it to fail, and more that they just want to draw a line under the era and move on. It doesn't help that DC can't seem to make up its mind whether this is old DCEU or new DCU era, and has vacillated back and forth on the matter.

Starting over wholesale would just be throwing out the baby with the bathwater at this point. The canon of how things work out will probably make more sense once Gunn's Superman comes out.

I mostly feel bad for Xolo, he seems like a real sweetheart

A great cast, especially Xolo and the bad-ass grandma stealing her scenes. Also loved the setting, like Miami meets Wakanda to feel more vibrant and fun. Downside is way too familiar in beats from learning the ropes to "this is your destiny" and such. Yet enjoyed the family helping him from the start so overall, a good fun film that doesn't deserve hate it's getting.

Is there any reference to Characters from other movies in the DCU. In The Blue Beatle movie?
