The cover lies, this we know, but now the truth of WHY Frost and Stark are marrying is revealed. Is it part of an intricate and cunning plan? Or is it a scene ripped straight out of a nineties sitcom?
Doing it right at the start of a writer's run really makes the shift of creative team more obvious. Ideally, they'd give it a few issues before sliding to the next romance, and maybe even SHOW the event that causes the break-up.
I liked this sort of thing better when it would say "Not a dream! Not a hoax! Not an imaginary story!" on the cover and everyone forgets the whole thing at the end of the issue.
This feels a bit more... Mark Millar in trying to insincerely provoke a reaction for no other point than laughing at people for caring.
And anyway, didn't they do this exact same joke with Spider-Man and Black Cat as recently as Nick Spencer?
I get the feeling that Marvel came up with the cover, and the idea of a wedding, to try to 'hide' the idea that the Hellfire Gala might be the end of Krakoa. Now the cat's out of the bag, they needed a story to semi-justify the art, and this is the best the writer could come up with a 4am.
It's the Hellfire Club, everyone pretends to be drinking buddies there. Question is, why would Feilong ask Tony where the booze is, given that a) Tony doesn't own the place and b) Tony doesn't drink?
Another thing this issue raises is Fisk's current legal status. He fled to Krakoa on account of being wanted for numerous crimes, but now he's operating openly in New York. What happened to the charges against him?
I'd joke that all these shock value allegiance switches are going to eventually have Gambit joining HYDRA and heiling Hitler, but they already had Captain America do that, so...
Y'know... under the current status quo post-Fall of Krakoa, I'm trying to think how an Emma-Tony marriage might work, and it's not all that hard.
They DO have an established history of hooking up, they're both rich industrialists/social elites, and right now, they're both screwed as far as their normal corporations (Stark and presumably Frost) go. They're also both "on the outs" or otherwise unable to fully rely on their usual teams for obvious reasons.
So the idea of a marriage to solidify certain assets and alliances, to counter their respective nemeses of Shaw and Feilong, might actually be an interesting story, if you played it as a boardroom Game of Thrones scenario. A marriage of convenience with some underlying mutual respect and appreciation. Two geniuses working to destroy their enemies through new tech, manipulation, proxies.
See, right now Feilong may have Stark's assets, and Emma's transferred most of hers (via Hellfire) to Fisk, but that just makes them even more of a wildcard team. Because Tony can rebuild a company from the ground up without even breaking a sweat--he's done it multiple times--and Emma's just... Emma. Together, they should be an unstoppable, terrifyingly effective team in the world of corporate politics and high finance. And I'd read the hell out of this if it was done by a writer who had any idea how to make that happen.
Christ, Emma, use your head. He's probably got some kind of protection and if you mind wipe him, all you'll do is expose yourself. More than usual, I mean.
Seriously though, I find it preposterous that Emma can't reign herself in for this. This is a war for the survival of mutantkind and she's willing to blow it all doing this? Taking out Feilong would only be a hollow victory since it would be spun that mutants have attacked a well loved philanthropist that has been working tirelessly for the defense of humanity.
Hmm. Several different feelings about this, but... nyyeeeeh... I think, on the whole, it being wacky hijinks gone really wrong is slightly better than trying to sincerely play it as Tony having found The One this time for real in Emma. (maybe.)
... how did "Hazel" get into the club anyhow? They're supposed to be a club for the super insanely rich. Wouldn't someone notice? (or is Fisk just bribing people to let her in?)

Thanks for clarifying. With Pat's dating history, it really could have gone either way.
