Millenia ago, he lived on Urgrund, home of the Then-Gods, a paradise known as the Third World. A god war started. Gog was the only one to take no sides. He protested the very idea. He was exiled and Urgrund destroyed itself so thoroughly it split into two worlds: New Genesis and Apokolips.

Gog ask for Metron help him to explore the Multiverse . When Metron refused. Gog punched Metron knocking him out and stole his Mobius Chair.

I absolutely love Kingdom Come...

But I can't see how this is remotely connected, thematically or otherwise, even with Magog there.

It's barely even that, though.

In Kingdom Come, Batman wore the armor because his body was beaten all to hell.

Here, he just decides to Tony Stark...because.

And where's Diana in all this?

It's my understanding that his body was beat all to hell in the kind of way you don't recover from. Even in the final scene, he was wearing what looked to be some kind of mobility aid.

Diana does appear briefly in that fight scene, though it's a fair question why she isn't shown as closer to Kal here, given where we left them. I'm content to wait on an answer to that one, but I hope one's forthcoming.

Honestly, I'm happy that this isn't too close to Kingdom Come, that it's just using that old story as a backdrop and swerving in different directions, because I'm just tired as hell of DC and Marvel telling me how great their old stories were. For the most part, this is what I want out of them instead. Nods to the past, sure fine great, but those come naturally just from publishing Superman and Batman stories, so put the weight on coming up with new ideas or new recombinations.

What I find perplexing, though, is this iteration of Magog. The original Kingdom Come already had a Magog, and his popularity ended with the irradiation of Kansas. He wasn't exactly the kind of guy you'd want to imitate, especially if you're leading Earth's superhero population into battle. And if KC really is past history on this Earth, then David can't be the original Magog...unless there's some time-warping involved for no reason I can noodle out. But as with Clark and Diana, I'll hold off any final verdicts until the whole thing comes in.

Time is all wibbly-wobbly on this iteration of Earth-22. First we see a future where a vast number of heroes are dead and buried. Then we're yoinked back in time to a near future where almost everyone seems to be alive.

So we're clearly -pre-KC for the majority of these two issues, based on the incident in Kansas not having occurred yet, the various Charlton heroes who were involved still being alive, etc.

So I don't know why Waid decided to make it explicit that Clark and Bruce had traveled to Earth-22, specifically the world of Kingdom Come, when there have been a number of discrepancies and deviations. This is Waid; he wrote the original, he doesn't make such egregious mistakes, so clearly there's gotta be some underlying reason for the alteration in Gog/Magog and the sequence of events.

I dont think KC is past history here, many of the characters look significantly younger than the KC incarnations. Superman for example.

I#d think of it as a KC adjacent universe.

"I'll be your cog?"
"No. I said Magog."
"Yeah, I heard. "Mah cog." I didn't even know you were from the south."
"Oh &@%$ this. If anyone wants me I'll be at the Source Wall."
