The "Saga" of Sarah Essen and Jim Gordon has a "hook" I've only heard about once: "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller has "Jim Gordon's wife is named Sarah." Fans pointed out to Frank Miller, that even though this is a possible future story, Gordon's wife is/was named Barbara. So in "Batman: Year One," Jim Gordon is married to a woman named Barbara and meets Sarah Essen, having an affair with her.
Any truth to this? Like I said, I only heard about this once. And the history of any DC Comics character tends to flip around and around. Post-FLASHPOINT, Batgirl pointed out Jim Gordon never remarried after his divorce.
I remember Sarah mostly from the No Man's Land story. I depressingly hated the outcome of her encounter with the Joker in that event. I wish that she would make a return someday. Since DC continuity has been rebooted many times already.
What happened to Sarah and Babs is a big part of why I struggle with "Joker Immunity" as a concept.
Sure Batman shouldn't kill but he's not the only one with a motive.
The GCPD is famously corrupt (to the point where Harvey Bullock is one of the GOOD ones) and there's no way Joker wouldn't be shot while "resisting arrest".
heck with the GCPD. I would argue that *everyone* in the DCU has a motive to kill the Joker. self-Preservation.
"Preemptive self-defense your honor. My client was so scared for his life when he saw the Joker that he exercised his 2nd Amendment right to self-defense in the face of an imminent threat. As did the 7 other concealed carry permit holders in the immediate vicinity. "
I've said it before, but the current iteration of the Joker should be treated as an outlaw in the original meaning of the term; a man outside the protection of the law. He should have a "shoot on sight" order on him in all 50 states of the union.
A person could kill the Joker in the middle of the day on a crowded street and there would be no witnesses and all the nearby security cameras would have "mysteriously malfunctioned"
"It's so tragic the way that mass murderer decided to end it all by shooting himself in the head thirty-five times"
I mean, sure, real life has taught me that there are going to be people looking for conspiracies but if literally everyone wants you dead then maybe it wasn't an elaborate plot by some well-connected people.
(Weirdos online would absolutely be convinced Joker was killed by Lex or Bruce to cover up some secret billionaire plot without once considering the inmates and staff at Arkham also want him dead.)
I don't think the concept of homo sacer exists in US law. But as a practical matter, having a character that's that deadly & that overused doesn't just make the heroes look bad; it makes the writers & editors look bad.
