Danger Street #9 - "Doctor Fate"

[laughing_tree]

If anything, Danger Street borrows a lot from the Cohen Brothers filmography: deep themes in absurd situations with absurd people trying to do good and often failing when they succeed and succeeding when they fail. This is surprisingly modern reference for me I know. Usually there’d have to be some old movies involved, but hell, every once in a while I emerge from the 40s to see what else is going on. -- Tom King

This gives me some serious Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead vibes. So maybe King hasn't travelled quite as far from the 40s as he thinks. ;)

Rereading this again, I kept getting "Princess Bride" vibes, myself. :)

Calvin and Hobbes for me. Or the Peanuts gang getting into heated theological debates on the sandlot.

It's a little weird to see Tom King having, you know, fun. And it's a very odd and silly sort of fun. But I kinda like it! The subversion of a classic superhero fight scene with endless philosophical dialogue makes for a neat combo.

As long as we accept this as an out-of-continuity thing... it's not entirely awful, and I found myself liking it more than some of King's other work. It still relies on him altering characters to fit his needs rather than him tailoring the story for the characters but...

And this issue really does have some fascinating Princess Bride or R&G Are Dead vibes to it.

Just stopping the fight like that, without even a single "Tis but a flesh wound"? Pshaw, these modern knights... no work ethic.
