IIRC those experimental defense robots were some kind of next-generation Death's Head robots.

Technically speaking, they're the first-gen.
They're a bunch from Sakaar which Hulk and his associates brought with them during World War Hulk, which SHIELD took into custody.
Dr. Necker is experimenting on them for her Minion project, a nod to the origin of the 90s Death's Head 2, which later absorbs the mind of the first Death's Head.
(Only slightly complicated, yes?)

Weren't those 'Death's Heads' also sent back in time to arrive in Sakaar's past? Or am I misremembering that?

Oh, and you didn't even mention Death Wreck and Death Metal. Ah, continuity.

I don't know, but time travel is pretty on-brand for Death's Head.

I didn't mention DW and DM because I was going for the (extremely) abbreviated version.
(Definitely not because I had forgotten all about them.)
