An old friend stumbles through Carol's door with terrible new powers.

The lady with the sword is an astronaut friend of Carol’s that she believed dead. Then she turned up at Carol’s door with great psychic powers.

The series is cancelled with this issue and the promised fight with Sabretooth isn’t seen until an issue of the anthology series Marvel Super-Heroes in 1992.

Really, this series ended the only way a Claremont series could end.
With someone being brainwashed.

It's not a proper Classic Guardians crossover until there's a pointless fight to eat up a few pages.
(Though it's their own damn fault for leaving Vance alone.
"Hey, let's leave the guy with a history of volatile mood swings and isolation issues to guard our base. What will go wrong?")

A shame. Speaking as someone who's not a fan of classic or modern flavour Carol, this was a very... odd series.
Very Claremont (funny that), but not extremely Claremont.
His quirks and tendencies aside (and I don't mean the brainwashing - I mean the arbitrary fights with other heroes), there is the obvious feeling he was invested in Carol.

Who then went on to... *checks* oh. Right.
Thirty years being hammered on the anvil.
You poor bugger, you've got it all to come.

See, I read "terrible new powers" and was thinking "She can reduce her strength to that of a flea's with but a gesture, she can smell mild annoyance, and she has the ability to levitate Tonka trucks when they're precisely two feet away from her."
