It helps that in recent years, Rhino has been portrayed as a more sympathetic/open to reason villain, and can actually be talked out of a rampage. Screwball -- well, she's chaotic, not evil. I hope Peter had that in mind when he went Joe Normal on them instead of thwip whipping his way to victory. Try that with some Spider-villains and get crispy-fried or smashed or worse.
Eh, don't get attached. It's a ticking clock towards "Becomes A Supervillain" based on where she works, but "Relative Killed In The Crossfire" or "Fades Into The Background" are also available.
I like her? But at the same time have no clear idea of who she is beyond "works at Arkham... I mean Ravencroft" and for some bizarre reason actually wants to date Peter. I think they met when he was visiting Aunt Anna during her bad trip on Krakoan drugs.
But yeah, any Peter Parker love interest who isn't Mary Jane or otherwise "in the business" doesn't exactly have an optimistic outcome.
Zeb Wells, with all the mad energy of a man who's realised he'll be off the title by the end of the year anyway, and can just do whatever he feels like.
Oh fuck off. It's just another disposable love interest being thrown at Peter in the desperate hopes that it'll catch on and maybe have her name picked out of a hat for a movie adaptation so the writer can put himself down as "Creator of Smitty Smitovich!" at comic conventions. Just like the next writer is going to throw his own pet sexy timer at Peter, for no reason, since Marvel just wants endless relationship drama for Peter with no actual relationship, much less character development.
There are like forty other spiders in the "Spider Family." Give one of them a love interest. Before the next writer forgets about the current crop of 'spidersonas' and tries to make his own lame sidekick catch on.
Peter’s love life wouldn’t be so annoying if they actually treated them like human beings and weren’t blatantly spinning their wheels to keep him and Mary Jane apart. Say what you will about when Peter was dating Carlie Cooper, but she got to leave because she decided enough was enough, they had irreconcilable differences and they treated it like actual people did. Peter and Mary Jane can’t just divorce, no, they have to sell their marriage to the devil to save Aunt May from a bullet wound that literally nobody else can fix despite accomplishing much more fantastical things on a regular basis. They can’t just break up over all the tension and stress with Kindred and whatever Peter did in the WHAT DID PETER DOOOOO arc, Mary Jane has to maroon herself in an alternate dimension where time moves faster and find her TRUE true love in Paul (who didn’t even have a last name for 20 issues) and their adorable kids whose names the writers clearly didn’t know themselves. Peter and Black Cat can’t split up because it wasn’t working out and he was clearly rebounding, it’s because it was working out TOO well and Black Cat just decided “hey I’m breaking up with you” because either Wells forgot to set up the breakup part of the breakup or the editors realised it was going too smoothly and put the kibosh on it.
Is that last sentence about Spider-Boy? I like Spider-Boy... plus I’m pretty sure he’s the only Spider sidekick, the only Spider-Man sidekick that came before him (to my recollection) was Alpha and that was only ever temporary arc to reinforce the importance of the whole power and responsibility themes.
This isn't just an issue with Spider-Man - superhero writers in general seem averse to writing normal, relatable reasons for break ups. Look at how both of Scott Summers's marriages ended. The first one fell apart because his wife turned out to be a clone of his supposedly dead girlfriend who wasn't actually dead. The second one had Scott (who was traumatized by Apocalypse possessing him) engaging in a mental affair of dubious at best consent with a former villain.
Despite being touted as the "realistic and relatable" alternative to DC, Marvel's approach to writing relationships is often one of their least relatable aspects of their universe.
