"I've HEARD of these fellows! They're CRIMINALS!" "Pfft, 'fellows.' That's a GREAT Gruenwald Steve Rogers, John! You're really nailing that mix of childlike naivete and befuddlement at the changes in the world since the 1940s." "This floy floy is strictly from DIXIE, but these fatheads will soon find out I'm a DUCKY SHINCRACKER! Movies should still cost a NICKEL! I suspect the Punisher might be HURTING people more than necessary!" "Dial it back." "And that's another thing! Why do these modern phones use TOUCH-TONES instead of dials--" [Avalanche attacks]

"'Bodgie' is Australian slang for 'jerk'!" YEAH THANKS FOOTNOTE, WE GOT IT
(Footnote later tried to get work on Preacher: "'Fuckwitted' is a neologism for 'stupid'!")

This came out around the same time DC was rolling out the first mostly-villain Suicide Squad, didn't it? Hm. I mean, the idea didn't start there, it goes back at least as far as The Dirty Dozen, but still.
Val Cooper, thinking the best thing to do with an untested, untrained new Captain America is lock him in a room with three 'former' terrorists and let them try to kill him. It's quite impressive how she can never make a sensible decision.
Interesting bit with Totally Not Sinister Government Man looking over John's records, given later developments in this arc. Don't know. If there is a connection there, Gruenwald doesn't lay it out explicitly. Much as I like his writing, he is a touch... on-the-nose with those sort of developments.
He is indeed. Also, deadly gas in the guy's phone reciever. And later on the guy behind him claims to be responsible for stuff that happens to John during this arc, which always seemed like a credit stealing stretch (of the "It was me, Barry!" kind). It's still looking like a stretch, but less of one.
I've always sort of assumed it was a mixed bag of stuff he actually set up and stuff that was just a lucky break but of course that particular character would never admit that some of his successes was just random chance.
Plus I don't buy for a moment that he knew Walker would crack as fast as he did. I'm guessing he was counting on a much longer breaking period.
