The Blank really upgraded his look after he fought Dick Tracy.

Hawkeye standing there about to grill some steaks while wearing his full costume, including pointy mask and gloves and boots and everything, is exactly the kind of thing that started to put me off Marvel books around this time. I mean, he's standing at the grill in a superhero costume! It's ridiculous!

I later learned that Marvel creators were given instructions by Jim Shooter that every comic book was some reader's first comic, so you had to make it clear on every page who each character was or else they'd be confused. Which may sound like a reasonable principle, but apply it too literally and too clumsily and you get this. Someone at Marvel decided "We can't have Hawkeye out of costume for a moment or some kid reading their first comic ever will say who's that guy, this is too hard to understand, this is boring, and give up comics forever!"

There is the small consolation of " Anybody who draws a guy in full costume grilling while wearing an apron had to know how goofy it looked. "

(Likewise the scripting of Iron Man's " Maybe I should take off my full-face helmet with the tiny mouth hole before I try to eat a burger. ")

I don't know. To me, it really feels like something that Hawkeye would do, back when he still loved being a superhero.
