James Bond: Himeros

This is a comic from Dynamite's loose-continuity Bond, which has had some big names write for it and also some randos. Greg Pak did a weird reinvention of Oddjob that maybe we should talk about sometime. And also there's this, Himeros, which is a very Law & Order, ripped from the headlines take on the Epstein Island scandal, with Ghislaine Maxwell as the Bond Girl. If you're thinking hey, this seems like a pretty dark and unsavory subject for James Bond, of all media, to deal with... yeah. Yeah, pretty much.











Am I a snob or is the artwork... not the best?

Okay, you may be thinking, this is a damn James Bond story about child prostitution, but at least 007 didn't sleep with Ghislaine Maxwell. And then you find that Dynamite included the pitch for the story...





Thank God it occurred to some editor that "Bond sleeps with Ghislaine Maxwell" is not something that ever needs to happen, in any continuity, or even to George Lazenby.

I understand the concept of a story which is inspired by real life events, not depicting them accurately or following them in a faithful way, I really do get there's a distinction...but. All of this so completely mangles what was going on with Epstein and Maxwell that it's just weird. It's as if the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies made the Rupert Murdoch/Robert Maxwell character played by Jonathan Pryce a misunderstood good guy. A story could do that, there's no law against it, but why? It would leave the audience baffled and annoyed.

(P.S.: yes, Ghislane Maxwell's father was both a real life villain and a Bond villain.)

I could actually see the Epstein story being used as the basis of a decent Bond story in a non-crass, non-exploitative way if it were done with sufficient care, but this ain't it.

I don't think it's possible for a Bond story to an Epstein-inspired plot in a non-exploitative way. Especially when you consider this franchise's history with women.

Some franchises can do Ripped From The Headlines. James Bond is probably too silly to be one of them.

I'm curious as to Greg Pak's take on Oddjob.

I haven't actually read it myself, but didn't Colonel Sun at least have a subplot dealing with a notorious child molestor?
