I never took it as Thor was depressed that's why he wasn't worthy.

I mean the flash back shows he was still worthy for a long time after he got morose it was just after his son ran away and he went to hit Sif for calling him out on spending all his time drinking to relive his glory days instead of being a father that he dropped his hammer and couldn't pick it up.
