On a random side note, I met Ron Marz at a convention this weekend. He charged $10 to sign my copy of Green Lantern #50. In all honestly, I've always considered him ... mid-tier. Average. Adequate. From everything I've read out of his bibliography, there was nothing that made me say "wow, oh my god, this is amazing." Moderately entertaining at times. Inoffensive. Unobjectionable. (Save for inspiring Gail Simone and the term 'fridging' of course)
In a way, it takes talent to be so consistently dependable yet... meh. I'm sure others love his work. :) (Why did I get something signed? Well, I'm an opportunist and he was right there across from Larry Hama and Fabian Nicieza...)
I definitely agree with this. While I wouldn't put any Marz-written comic among my all-time favourites, there's not a single comic he's written that I didn't at least enjoy. I loved his run on Green Lantern, but I wouldn't say they're the greatest comics of all time. They're FUN as heck (except for the fridging thing, which...yeah, that was bad even back then). But I've never read a single Marz comic that was outright bad. He's consistently a solid writer.
It probably says something that what he's best known for is two stories within a year of each other, one of which was almost entirely pushed on him, the other of which was so typical of its era that it inspired a website about how much its plot twist was like everything else being published at the time (if a bit more...memorably extreme in its imagery).
"And so now we have fulfilled the contractual obligation of dealing with the guilt of having been Galactus' herald for this quarter and can move on with the regular programming. Until next time, true believers!"
