Surprised that the story's framing " Humanity First " as a new thing - you'd think movements like that would've existed before as crank fringe things occasionally given a coat of respectability, now given a more lasting dose in the aftermath of Absolute Power.
I suspect DC didn't include such an element because they didn't want more accusations of ripping off Marvel from fans like Chris Sims. Granted, I found the "DC is trying to be like Marvel" allegations to be overblown given how Superman and Batman started out. Never mind how often Marvel themselves copied DC.
I think there's a certain degree past which "fringe things that existed before" feel like new things. To pick the most obvious comparison, Nazism has always existed in some form, but as recently as twenty years ago it felt like the sad, feeble gasps of a movement that couldn't admit it had been defeated by history.
Now? Well, it's still running on depraved nostalgia for the most part, but it has certain powerful "allies" (really just hoping to use it for their own ends) that make it into something we can't just laugh off.
Something I've observed about Nazism in pop culture is that the imagery of the ideology in fiction was often very different from the reality.
Take for instance the "sexpot Nazi dominatrix" archetype that was popularized by Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS, an image completely at odds with how prudish and repressive Nazis were regarding women's sexuality.
Or, to focus on comics, Danger Girl's Hammer Empire has an olive-skinned little person and man who is both an amputee and a mute. Despite the Nazis famously hating the disabled, among other groups.
Welcome back, Power Company. I enjoyed the original series. Kurt Busiek did some fun work, and it's a shame it didn't last.
I don't think we've even seen most of the original members in a very long time outside of cameos. But if Josiah's recruiting Black heroes, he'd better find Skyrocket's phone number at the very least...
Also, look, it's Bolt. I guess we're not completely ignoring Priest's Black Adam series after all.
The Power Company is proof "brilliant but canceled" works for comics as much as TV. A brilliant work by Busiek that deserved a longer run so nice to have some of it back.
