Orwell, who was very much a figure of the left but had been disillusioned by his experience in Spain, was trying to say that there is a threat, that Communism can lead to totalitarianism like it did in the Soviet Union, and rightfully sort of sounded the alarm bells. And thanks to some of my former colleagues in the CIA who propagated that book, it became a huge seller and became sort of the symbol of, like, this is what could happen if Communism gets carried away. And I just feel that there is a threat of totalitarianism today, but it does not seem to be coming from a Communistic point of view. -- Tom King

I’m not so sure we really need an allegory here. Polls have shown that people believe Trump is a fascist and they voted for him anyways, we don’t need a parable to tell us that when you vote for fascism you get fascism

I wonder if King realizes that it's not Communism or Socialism that leads to "fascism" and really any economic system can? China is actually a capitalistic system with a dictatorship, as is Russia right now, and ahem.... But Denmark which is also a socialist system is not a dictatorship, nor was France. And a lot of European hybrids.

I wish more people were afraid of Fascism than Communism or Socialism.
