Yeah, he gave Tony some badly needed charm. Whats his politics and personality anyway? I know in the Cold War he was basically American propaganda.

Like any character written by dozens of writers over decades, it varies, but I'd broadly peg Tony as a technocrat who thinks that policy decisions should be made by experts, combined with the tendency to believe that expertise in engineering and hard sciences gives him a basis to assume his own expertise in any number of unrelated fields.
