In fiction, however, I think there is much to be gained by telling stories about a superhero who has a disability.

I'll ask you the same question I just asked [insanejournal.com profile] galateus: would you be cool if John Henry Irons became Superman's slave? He'd still be a prominent black character, it's not he was a real person having his civil rights stripped away, and there might be interesting stories in seeing how slavery was treated in modern times.
