Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Sep. 16th, 2025 08:38 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.
But even so... What a week... and after the past... god knows how long, that is saying something.
The simplest summary of the murder of the Right wing provocateur and influencer is "I don't support the things that led to Charlie Kirk's death. But Charlie Kirk did."
However, watching the US Administration attempt to weaponise his death against some nebulous, ill-defined, left wing "conspiracy", despite so much of the evidence suggesting that the accused (but not yet charged) alleged perpetrator doesn't fit that preconceived notion, is chilling.
And now the UK is giving POTUS 47 a SECOND State visit. As a rather elegant act of protest, our Channel 4 will be broadcasting a collation of the longest uninterrupted reel of lies, misrepresentations of facts, and outright untruths from... POTUS47. It's nice that they have something about him on TV to watch when he's spending the evening at Windsor Castle (I am no ardent monarchist, but even I have to feel a bit of sympathy for the King over the next couple of days)
Oh, and 150,000 or so anti=immigration protesters marched in London, and had the "pleasure" of being addressed by Elon Musk, who was his usual charming self.
In more optimistic news, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been jailed for 27 years following an attempted coup to overturn the election he lost in 2023.
Not had much time for TV this week, so am open to suggestions.

Date: 2025-09-16 09:45 am (UTC)I am coming to the end of several runs on my list. I have decided to continue a bunch of titles I gave up on for whatever reasons. So, look oit for the returns of Batman and the Outsiders, New Warriors, Wonder Woman, Thunderbolts and Firestorm.
The villains Batman and the Outsiders fight in the early issues aren't all that interesting, but I did enjoy the rest of the book when I first read it.
My Wonder Woman posts got an overwhelmingly negative response, but I quite enjoyed them so I am continuing for my own interest.
My New Warriors amd Thunderbolts posts were pretty, so it was an easy choice to pick them up again.

Date: 2025-09-16 11:35 am (UTC)As for Wonder Woman, since you'll be picking that up again may I venture a request? I'd like to see how exactly they handled the END of the "Emma Peele knockoff" era -- how Diana got her powers back and such.

Date: 2025-09-16 11:43 am (UTC)I will try my best to post as much of Wonder Woman as I can, it depends if I lose interest. I am sure I already read how Diana got her powers back in some 'Best Of' collection or other, but I can't for the world of me remember how.

Date: 2025-09-16 11:37 am (UTC)what an exciting time
Went to the bookfair.
Managed to trick myself into buying the terrible Discworld TV show by slipping it in with $20 worth of good DVD's.
Also found a copy of A Natural History of Skull Island (the artbook for the Peter Jackson King Kong film). It was $50 which is way cheaper than what those bastards on Ebay are selling it for (even the non-autograpghed by Peter Jackson version is stupidly expensive).
And then the ladies at the counter thought the price was a bit much so they knocked it down to $30!
yay!
Found a Snowpiercer collection. There were some disconnected between the various stories but they were each written by different people and published at least a decade apart, so I guess that's to be expected.
The timeline in the back claims that the various different versions all take place in a single continuity which I suspect is a lie.
Decided to reread A Song Of Ice And Fire just in-case they announce The Winds Of Winter next week.

Date: 2025-09-16 10:36 pm (UTC)Oh, I'd love a trip report of this. I tried watching a few minutes of the first episode a few years ago.
Years later, I tried watching another minute.

Date: 2025-09-16 11:18 pm (UTC)I recall thinking that if you had any familiarity with Discworld you weren't going to like this and it wasn't good enough to stand on it's own merits. Some other highlights:
Why bother adapting the books if they were going to make such sweeping changes?
Why have they interpreted Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler into a woman crime boss rather than just inventing a new character when the name is the only connection? Why are they calling the Auditor of Reality the Observers?
Why did they say Lord Vetinari legitimized the Assassin's Guild, when it's not one of the criminal organizations he legalized and is in fact a centuries old insinuation he himself studied at? Why are they a bunch of weirdos rather than the refined aristocrats they were in the books? Did they miss the joke?
Why did they say Carrot was ostracized by the dwarfs for being too tall and then say that actually some dwarfs are human sized?
If they wanted to be progressive and make Sybil more empowered (ignoring her actual character in the process) why have they made her more conventionally attractive?
no no just have them sing All The Little Angles like this with no regard for it's original context or significance

Date: 2025-09-16 11:45 pm (UTC)I'd love it someone did an autopsy on this series, find out how all these decisions got made.
Don't need to name names, just give us an idea on what level they came from, where the buck stopped.

Date: 2025-09-16 11:49 am (UTC)As a Canadian who is an ardent monarchist, I was delighted when the King accepted Prime Minister Carney's invitation to deliver the current government's Throne Speech in Parliament last spring. He prefaced the Speech (which I watched on YouTube) with his own personal reflections on Canada's legacy. At a time when the Orange Entity has made no secret of wanting to make us the 51st state one way or another, I genuinely appreciated His Majesty symbolically helping to reinforce our resolve that Canada is not, and never will be, a MAGA fiefdom. (Also, his command of French was impressive, including the accent, though I guess that's to be expected from someone who received a royal education.)
And while I share your sympathy for the King having to put up with Trump yet again, I feel even more sorry for the late Pope Francis. Whatever may be said about the papacy, he didn't deserve having to spend what ended up being the second-last day of his life with J.D. Vance. 😞

Date: 2025-09-16 02:14 pm (UTC)As you can imagine, fans are less than thrilled at the usage of Shitty Plagiarism Machine, even to create a song that was arguably meant to be soulless.

Date: 2025-09-17 07:22 pm (UTC)Perfectly professional performances from the singers mind you, so no slight on them, but the songs themselves all seemed pretty soul-less, even the finale number after the first couple of verses.

Date: 2025-09-16 03:13 pm (UTC)I've enjoyed reading them so much, I've decided to open my own Out of Context Mickey Mouse Comic Strip account on Blusky. Been a lot of fun so far. ^^

Date: 2025-09-17 12:16 am (UTC)Mouse comics, you say...? I grew up on a lot of them in China, but these look like the really old school ones, the ones purportedly drawn by Disney himself?

Date: 2025-09-16 08:59 pm (UTC)Bleugh...
(was a teensy bit worried given some of the coughing going on, but turns out it is just a cold and nothing else. Phew.)
Was thinking "it's quite considerate of Game Freak and Nintendo to not spoil every detail about Legends A-Z before it comes out."
The day after, they released another trailer revealing some more details.
... I was expecting another double Mega Evolution (or whatever the correct term might be). I just wasn't expecting it to be Raichu.
Because... y'know. Raichu.
Bandai released official artwork for Kyokomon.
Between this and the look of Time Stranger, I hold out hope we may finally get an explanation for Chronomon and what its whole deal is.
The Claws of Awaji DLC came out for Assassin's Creed Shadows. And it was free.
Current opinion so far: Way too much damn ambushes.
Can't even walk down the street without it turning into a melee with fourteen guys...
Saw the trailer for Marvel Zombies.
... oh. More Red Guardian.
Can't even muster up a sarcastic "yay" or "good".
(I'm sure there's no reason to be suspicious about how despite Vellani being on the cast list there didn't seem to be a lot of Kamala in the trailer.
Or that this thing is written by Zeb Wells.)
Last week on Ultimate Wolverine:
Oh, for- ...
... nope, almost a week later, still annoyed.
(When I said there was a high likelihood of it turning out Natsu wasn't the NUU Cyclops and there was an actual flesh and blood Scott somewhere and he was probably dead... I wasn't being sarcastic. I just wish I had been wrong.)
