If it's any consolation, my daughter's very favorite toy was her battered Raggedy Ann, who she called "friend". I rescued Friend from toy stores, restaurants, etc. over the course of five years. At one point Friend was falling apart, so my MIL kindly offered to repair her. And then she never returned her to my kid. The woman had serious issues, to say the least.
So...a few years back, I casually mentioned that I was working on a quilt for my kid, and it would be really cool to use the pieces of Friend in it. She heartily agreed (probably because I'd be tearing it apart), and gave it back to me. I promptly sent Friend to my daughter, and she's in her bedroom to this day.
Yes, I lied. I have no regrets and would do it all over again.
I think the idea here is that while Lindabot was indeed a robot, her personality, including her memories, was one that Kara had become accustomed to. Repairing her hardware might result in a hard reset of her mind, meaning all that made her a person, if a non-biological one, would be gone. From that point on she'd have different experiences, different memories of those experiences, and thus be a different person, rather than the Lindabot Kara knew resurrected.
How would they know if they don't check the hardware holding her software? I don't instantly assume that my computer has lost all of its data if it crashes. Or even if it bursts into fire like once happened.
Yeah, that's not a good example for that lesson. Kara screwed up. She forgot Lindabot and that's why she's in rough condition. It's her fault. This isn't a "you can't save everyone" moment. This is a "great responsibility" moment.

And if anything ever happens to Lesla-Lar, I say we riot.
