Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Feb. 10th, 2026 09:39 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.
The Winter Olympics are underway in Italy.
Alongside the usual magnificent achievements, there was also controversy caused by Gus Kenworthy, a British skiier, though one who was raised in America and had competed for the USA in the past, leaving a less than subtle message about his about American current affairs. Aside from everything else, I admire his calligraphy in a challenging medium.
The Superbowl happened, but being neither American nor a sportsperson, I can't get worked up about the game and can only point you to the half time show with Bad Bunny (Which annoyed all the right people, especially when you read the disaster which was the "alternate" half time show with Kid Rock), and the movie trailers)
The Madalorian and Grogu got one which was more... vibes than anything else, though the voiceover did seem like it was about to recommend some sort of old fashioned farm product, possibly cheese or cured meats.
Supergirl featured an adorable cameo by everyone's favourite superdog as a puppy. As an aside DC are also sponsoring puppies for training as guide and service dogs, always a worthy cause IMHO, and the first puppies are appropriately named: Krypto, Clark, Kara, Lois and umm... Lobo?
"Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" told a story about what did, or did not, happen to Benjamin Sisko, in a sort of love letter to DS9 as SAM the photonic life form tried to find out more. The pacing and some of the story choices felt weird to me, even whilst acknowledging I am probably not a target demographic anymore. However, for a couple of the surprises we got, I'll forgive it a lot.
And in slightly on topic news, Jay and Miles of the long running XplaintheXmen podcast have announced the series will end at some point during this coming year. They will cover the Grant Morrison as their finale. As a longtime fan and commentator there, I will miss them, but am glad they are going out on their own terms, and on a run I've been looking forward to them covering (though I will miss them covering the Chuck Austen run, which I suspect would have been... entertaining)
Also, for those who are interested, they have provided some basic resources for those looking to get more involved in local activism (directly, or supporting) in their most recent post.
And adding in Sir Ian McKellen's magnificent recitation of lines attributed to Shakespeare from "Sir Thomas More", on the subject of the treatment of immigrants, which shows that some things never change.

Date: 2026-02-10 10:39 am (UTC)oh season two is only going to be seven episodes long. Considering how they did with eight episodes I can't imagine this is going to help things.
(I can't say I predicted this but this does explain why going through director's credits I could only find up to episode seven. And based on other things I found season three will also be the same length. I always thought Book Three would be the hardest season for them to adapt and this makes it even harder).
Now that's all the facts we have, but on the rumour and heresy side of things a guy on Reddit is claiming to have an inside source who told him the titles (he did accurately list the season one titles back in 2023 so I guess these could potentially be real, though he does have a mixed track record).
Okay it looks like they go to Ba Sing Se, then they leave for the Spirit Library and then go back to Ba Sing Se. Also they decided to switch up the style for the title making them longer and vaguely pretentious.
The latest volume of Usagi Yojimbo arrived. It included a moving and heart-felt tribute by Stan Sakai in memory of his younger brother Kenneth.

Date: 2026-02-10 12:45 pm (UTC)For the record my comment wasn't entirely about Epstein (it was MOSTLY about Epstein) and related fallout (including people revisiting past conspiracies). It's also about the surveillance state, medical breakthroughs, ECT. It's been a BIG month and the people controlling things aren't trying to hide it ... they're running Superbowl commercials.
(I see the Ring ad about "finding lost dogs" got enough negative feedback that it seems to have been removed from YouTube)

Date: 2026-02-10 01:01 pm (UTC)Captain America. I have just finished the Arena of Death arc and we are right in to a jaunt to the Savage Land with a bunch of dinosaur-men. They are the work of some guy calling himself the High Technician. I swear, it he turns out to be the Man-Beast...
Catwoman. Jim Balent's artwork is an acquired taste at the best of times, but things have noticeably gone downhill in these post-Cataclysm issues. Maybe it’s down to the inker, I just don’t know. Any way, I will not be reading any further.
Checkmate. Peacemaker is supposed to appear in this, but DC appear to have printed a load of black pages instead. (Have I run that joke in to the ground yet?)
Daredevil. Frank Miller makes Daredevil good again. That being said, I quite enjoyed Jenny Blake-Isabella’s short run that came before. I liked the idea of different super-villains being in charge of different departments of HYDRA. The only really notable thing about Marv Wolfman’s run was the introduction of Bullseye. Even then, it was later writers who made him interesting.
Defenders. I liked the subplot about the Hulk adopting a baby dear, but then I jeep being reminded that Nighthawk and Jack Norriss exist. There is the Elf With a Gun subplot as well. It probably wasn’t intended to be that deep, but future writers won’t be able to it alone and will try to insert meaning in to it.
Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison. Once I would gave dismissed this run as little more than pretentious guff, but now I find it delightfully weird. It probably helps that my comics reading has diversified from being just mainstream superhero stuff.
Fantastic Four. Jack Kirby is gone, but Johns Romita and Buscema try their best to pick up the slack. Crystal is reacting badly to New York’s pollution and must return to the Inhumans. I am sure Johnny will react rationally. (Spoilers: He did not.)
The Flash by Mark Waid. My own dislike for the character makes it easy for me to believe that the Barry Allen running amok is the real deal. However, it is revealed to be Reverse-Flash all along. He is such a Flash stan that he tries to literally become him.
Firestorm. How did Firestorm struggle with a loser like Slipknot? Killer Frost I get because she actually has powers, but Slipknot is just a guy with a rope. I remembered Mindboggler from Suicide Squad as well. A lot of Squad fodder from this book it seems.
Ghost Rider. Johnny Blaze is saved by a man who totally isn’t Jesus. According to Jenny Blake-Isabella’s introduction in my Marvel Masterworks, the story was passed by three different editors, but an unnnamed assistant editor went over their heads and changed everything.

Date: 2026-02-10 03:52 pm (UTC)I have seen clips of the Bad Bunny halftime show and wow! It was such an energetic, fun time, full of love and hope, and Pedro Pascal as an added bonus. I was talking to my daughter while driving her home, and she mentioned all of the singers, pausing on Ricky Martin. I laughed and said, "Livin' la vida loca!" and she went "OH! THAT GUY!"
Score one for the old fart!
My wife and I did watch a YouTube compilation of the commercials, though, and they generally fell flat IMHO. I did get a sick kick out of "Will Shat", and the manscaping one...my wife and I looked at one another and said, "WHAT THE HELL DID WE JUST WATCH?"
Comics: Really enjoying Fraction's "Batman", especially how he got around that cliffhanger the previous issue. Also liking the current JSA run--I've always preferred the old guard as opposed to all the new kids. And I actually grabbed the first part of "52" off Comixology Unlimited because I was bored and what the hell. Also reread "Danger Street", which I'd always enjoyed.

Date: 2026-02-10 05:30 pm (UTC)I don't give a damn what that show says.
Ben Sisko came back and he and Cassidy quietly lived out their lives together.
The End.
Ahem.
So. British politics this week.
Labour doing as Labour does; an explosion of back-stabbing, finger-pointing, blame-shifting and bus-throwing.
Oh, and probably a few "oooh, I would never betray you, sir..." going on.
Feels like it was just the other week when they were just doing some petty in-fighting.
That long ago time of... two weeks ago.
*heaviest sigh*
(it's stuff like this that makes you hear about places going two years without any government and think "wow. That sounds brilliant.")
The more the Beeb keeps declaring Doctor Who is safe and fine and definitely will continue, the less assured I feel.
Was wondering about getting that Fantastic Four Epic Collection of the start of Byrne's run (lack of space notwithstanding). But I'm just not sure.
Kind of ambivalent. Mainly because it's written by Byrne...
There's yet another relaunch of Moon Knight starting tomorrow, which makes, what, four under MacKay now?
I know Marvel really like their relaunches, and MacKay apparently really likes Moon Knight, but this is getting a bit worrying now.
Ultimate X-Men ends t'morrow as well (not counting whatever Ultimate Universe Finale has in it).
... I still just do not get this series.
I just do not get it.
I'm pretty sure I'm well outside whatever the target audience is anyway.
And if I'm hard on Ult Black Panther for its insular (*disclaimer: might not be the word I'm thinking of) approach, I should probably be the same toward this series. But I'm not?
It does feel a little like a series that was gearing up to start off small and expand outward as it went on, and then the higher-ups were all "uh, no, Peach. When we said you only had twenty-four issues, we meant it."
Speaking of the NUU, like how Ultimate Endgame totally ignores pretty much everything that happened in UBP.
Turnabout feels like fair play.
(Also, there's a bit where it says hardliners opposed T'Challa teaming up with the Ultimates, which... is kind of bizarre given his series depicted the Wakandan government of consisting of him, Shuri, and maybe Okoye.
And they killed off all the evil old ladies.
Not to mention T'Challa spent a good chunk of the series just buggering off to do his own thing anyway.
So who exactly is it that's objecting that's supposed to have the power to stop him?
Oh, Ultimate Black Panther. Even in death, you raise unanswered questions.)
Been watching that Transformers: Cybertron on Amazon.
Oddly compelling series. You can tell the dub writers were having fun on this one.

As a side note it's interesting to see how the Joker has become a symbol in recent years for marginalized people; in addition to LGBT people he was also a protest symbol for oppressed people in places like Lebanon and Hong Kong.
