The various EU books (old and new) confirm that Tarkin blowing up Alderaan was a terrible move. First, just about every Imperial soldier from the planet defected to the Rebellion on the spot. Second, it galvanized the galaxy, making them realize how horrible the Empire truly was, no one was safe so if not joining the Rebellion at least not supporting the Empire anymore. If anything, Tarkin's decision only accelerated the Empire's end.
I like, in "The Legends of Luke Skywalker", that we find out there's a conspiracy theory doing the rounds of the Empire that the Death Star was a fake, and that Alderaan wasn't destroyed.
Others don't hold with that level of denial, but do believe the Death Star was a stunt, and no vessel could channel that kind of power without blowing itself up on warm up, so Alderaan was destroyed by the Empire but they had planted charges on fault lines across the planet and detonated them.
There must have also been some who thought it was a false flag by the Rebellion, and they were the ones who planted the charges. Conspiracy theorists' ability to disappoint you never fails.
