For Empowered Fans

For my first post on the new version of Scans Daily, I'm going to give an alert to all the Empowered fans in the audience.

Apparently this week Dark Horse is releasing an Empowered One-shot, and according to Adam it's sales are going to help determine future plans of Empowered, possibly including future releases.

So if you're an Empowered fan? Or if you have heard about it and want to check the comic out? Now's a good time.

I'm unable to order online due to lack of credit card and inability to get help from anyone I know with a credit card. Also the only trades that are stocked in my area are the high profile ones or the ones with many good reviews- Emp is one of the lower on that scale especially as it's not for kids. Mostly it's manga there's a demand for here, and I've scoured other comic trade sellers but Kinokuniya is the only one that even stocks Emp, sad to say.

Incidentally, I live in Singapore.

Can you get a debit card around there? Paypal accepts at least some of those, been using it with my Visa Electron, and you should be able to use it on a good portion of web based stores.

Is Empowered one of the most criminally undersold books out there, or is it just too damn niche? (Although you'd think "sexy underdressed superheroine" wouldn't be that niche) I know Warren has said he's only still drawing because he can't afford to just write full-time, which is both a goddamn shame, because he deserves to be wildly successful, and a blessing for those of us who enjoy his art.

I admit, the fear of being misunderstood if I'm seen buying/having bought Empowered is one of the things that just leaves me floundering at the comics store Q_Q

I know what you mean. A few months ago when I was in my local comics store I asked for the latest volume of Empowered and the trades for PS238 and Astro City: Dark Age. The guy behind the counter laughed a little! It was a good laugh, but still...

Yeah, for me, it's more the reaction of people seeing the book around my house. Empowered generally gets as explicit as a book can be without actually showing anything graphic.

I'm a girl, and an Empowered fan, and honestly, I don't think about it that much. I can't, really.

If I self-censored my reading choices based on what other people might think of me.... Well, there goes the Scrooge McDuck comics and the Magic Trixie and Scary Godmother and Owly (aren't those a little YOUNG for you?), and the Dykes to Watch Out For collections and yaoi manga (why would you want to read about GAY STUFF?), and the superhero comics (aren't those more of a GUY THING?) , and Omaha the Cat Dancer (I can't believe you like PORN), and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (that's so VIOLENT), and Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist (why do you HATE MEN?), and pretty soon my bookshelf is whittled down to, what, Persepolis and a copy of Maus? Maybe?

And depending on who sees me buying/reading those, I may still get judged, because there's still gonna be that guy that thinks less of me for reading COMICS.

Eh, I don't read porn on the bus and I don't leave R-rated material where kids can get at it. Beyond that it's nobody's damn business. Life's too short, you know?

After a male clerk at Books-A-Million flipped through my (mysteriously un-shrinkwrapped) copy of a graphic lesbian porn manga as I was checking out, I really can't get shamefaced about buying lil ol' Empowered. In the end, who cares?

I'm about two thirds through the first volume. I found the first third just really dull and boring, but around the time Ninjette appeared it became more interesting.
