Well, I bet someone was waiting for this.
Jan. 21st, 2010 01:50 amso in Amazing Spider-Man 618, things happen.
Not Rhino related things, but Mister Negative related things (and the Maggia, and Mysterio. Wanna throw the Masked Marauder in there while we're at it?)
See, Aunt May's just found out "Mister Negative" == "Martin Li"
Consequently, Martin utilizes the corruption aspect of his powers; since Aunt May is a good person, the corruption takes wonderfully so that this scene can happen:

(Jay's secret? He wrote some popular profitable books under a pen name.)
Anyhow, that was the windup, and here's the blow:

... well, considering that her clothes aren't flipped, perhaps it was a more subtle variation of the Mister Negative powerset.
At any rate, those eyes are freaky.
And I guess it had to be said. After the corruption kicks off, it'll probably end in some " Peter, I said some hurtful things... but they're still true. " deal.

Date: 2010-01-21 08:14 am (UTC)Pity that this won't lead to Peter actually becoming a better person who improves his life.

Polaris: Oh, if I don't agree with you I have to be brainwashed?
Thank you

Date: 2010-01-21 05:54 pm (UTC)When the real Aunt May was reunited with Peter, she found out that he was Spider-Man and took a more active role in his life. Lots of great moments between her and Peter and other superheroes.
When Mephisto wiped away the knowledge from everyone except for Mary Jane, Aunt May forgot and her character began regressing as she was before she found out.

Date: 2010-01-21 08:20 pm (UTC)Gee, Pete, I dunno, maybe you've been saving thousands of lives.
In principle I love it when Peter gets confronted with the gap between the potential he had as Peter Parker and the life he's actually living. In small doses, it's good drama/angst. But there are two related problems that Slott is having here:
1) The status quo set in place by Quesada, Brevoort, Wacker, and the Brain Trust of BND writers (not necessarily in that order) is that Peter always loses. So all bringing up his potential does is remind us that he will never get to use it, not because he is tragically bound to his life as Spider-Man, but because the Editors Say So. This isn't interesting; it's just irritating and yanks us out of the story.
2) The Brain Trust have successfully dumbed down Spidey past the point where he can be a convincing geek.
True, Slott himself has made a few forays into writing stories where Peter's scientific smarts are a part of the plotline (the Fantastic Four team-up, the Octavius battle referenced here), but it never rings true because he's such an imbecile the rest of the time, making basic tactical and logical errors for the sake of cheap, regurgitated drama. (Oh noes, he's run out of webbing!)
Plus, while his comic book science isn't bad (it's not, you know, actual science, but it's entertaining enough), he's always trying so hard to make us see how awesome Spidey is, and it just seems horribly forced. Especially since BND's predecessor is the JMS run, and J. Michael Straczynski, for all his flaws, wrote Peter's geek smarts as well as his pure love for knowledge more convincingly than any writer before or since. Slott just can't measure up.
